“Freddy and I decided to check on you because a security guard called the office to say there had been some sort of incident in your cottage,” replied the woman.

She walked into the cottage, with Freddy Suratwala following closely.

He looked happy to see me.

“Finally come to your senses, have you?” he asked, with a grin.

“Freddy, he’s here with my cousin and her husband,” said Tasha, with a warning glance at him.

It was no secret that Freddy was disappointed when she broke off our betrothal, and I’d bet my Aston Martin on the fact that he didn’t let her forget that.

Tasha introduced us to her friend, and it felt weird when she introduced me by just my name. I was so used to her introducing me as her fiancé that I waited for the phrase. But it didn’t come. Of course, it didn’t. Tasha and I were… well, we were nothing to each other anymore. Acquaintances, really. But Sandhya’s eyes widened when she heard my name, and she shot my ex-fiancée a meaningful glance that Tasha ignored.

It was a small thing, but it meant that she had heard of me. I knew I was behaving like a lovestruck schoolboy, but I couldn’t hide the small smile of satisfaction at that revelation. The only reason her friend would know my name was if Tasha had talked about me. Then, I sighed. Only this woman. Onlyshecould reduce me to this. It was pathetic.Iwas pathetic.

CHAPTER5

TASHA

Isaw the smug smile on DV’s face when he registered Sandhya’s glance at me, and I wanted to slap it off. Stupid, romantic Sandhya, and her stupid, romantic ideas about DV and me. Yes, I might have mentioned him a couple of times when I’d had more wine than was wise. That meant nothing!

Freddy looked around in surprise at the team that came out of my room with their gear.

“What’s going on?” he asked worriedly.

“Someone left a dead bird on my bed, and the guys went all CSI on me,” I said sullenly.

Ugh! This was turning into a fucking circus. Sandhya let out a squeak of surprise.

“Someone left awhaton your bed?” she yelped.

Wearily, I explained what had happened.

“Now, tell them they are overreacting,” I demanded.

“Umm, I’m not sure they are, my child. I’ve never heard of something like this happening,” Freddy replied doubtfully.

“Thank you for being the voice of reason, Fredster,” exclaimed DV, looking smug again. “I’ll call for extra security.”

I growled under my breath and he shot me his signature shit-eating smile that always brought out the worst in me.

“On the other hand, do we really need extra security? The security at Paradiso is quite good,” continued Freddy, looking bemused.

The poor man didn’t know the over-protective alpha-ness that was The Royal Guard.

“We need to find the person who did this, Freddy,” said DV.

“I’m sure we will,” replied Freddy, putting a calming hand on DV’s shoulder.

“This is a very close community, Your Highness,” said Sandhya.

“Please call me DV,” broke in His Lordliness impatiently.

She shot him a warm smile.

“As I was saying, we are a very close community, DV. Everyone knows everyone’s business. In fact,” she stopped abruptly, looking slightly uneasy.

“What?” asked DV sharply.
