He looked relieved as I decided for him, kissing him lightly on the cheek. He picked up his suitcase and headed inside as Daisy and I took our much-needed walk around the block. As soon as we were far enough away, I called Crystal to tell her Sam was here.

“Are you seriously telling me right now that Samuel Jones, the Captain of the Vancouver Devils, man of the hour just showed up at your doorstep a day early?!”

“You’re really setting the bar low there, Crys. I think I’m going to take him round mom's tonight. Joe needs me to go over some last-minute wedding details and well, they keep complaining they haven’t met Sam.”

“Well, they have met him, just not the new him.”

Crystal tutted on the other end of the phone, and I could picture the attitude she expressed. I could hear Lacy trying to quietly whisper in the background. I just knew she was asking a question about me or had something to say about my idea. They had started spending a lot more time at Crystal’s apartment. I was waiting for them to share that they had moved in together.

“Do you think that’s wise Kim? Your mom might flip out.” Lacy had apparently taken over the phone call. “Sorry, Crys put you on speaker.”

“It’s not wise, it's ballsy and not like Kim at all. I think this hockey player's dick has gone straight to her head.”

Crystal chimed in and I had to hold back my laughter. Daisy tugged on her leash as we rounded the corner of Elm Street, three blocks away from our home. I hadn’t realized how far we had walked, I had been distracted by my phone call. The snow was getting heavier.

“I’m gonna head back home, girls. The weather is getting pretty bad, and I’d rather not slip and die in the snow.”

“Not before you get some extra D.”

Rolling my eyes at Crystal, I sighed. She spent far too much time with her brothers or listening to way too many fuckboy podcasts. Heading back home, the sky was fading into a beautiful pink shade as the snow continued to fall. It was so beautiful, and one of the main reasons I was happy Luke agreed to move here after we graduated.

I kicked my shoes off on the front porch before taking off Daisy’s coat and beanie. She shook any snow that sat on her fur and quickly headed inside. No doubt to lie in front of the fire.

My clothes were a little wet, and I didn’t want to sit around in them for too long. After heading upstairs, I stripped off in the bathroom. Hanging my trousers over the shower door and coat on the towel rack. The room was still a little steamy, Sam must have taken my advice and had a shower.

Which meant he probably climbed into my bed. I wanted to join him, cuddle up and get warm together. However, I threw on my bathrobe and headed back downstairs. I had a few emails to answer from the parents of my team. My stomach decided to take that moment to grumble, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten since breakfast.

I was used to being an early riser, but after lunch, my eyes began going a little square. Daisy had headed upstairs after having her lunch and I had no doubt she was in the guest bedroom lying down on the bed.

Climbing into bed minutes later, I gave up trying to keep myself awake. I set my alarm for an hour and looked down at Sam who laid with his pillow tucked under his arm. Laying next to him, I felt my heart begin to race and the sudden panic rise.

Luke was the last man who slept in this bed with me.

And now, Sam was in his spot.

How easily I had replaced my husband with the next guy who showed me any affection. The feeling of betrayal and shame washed over me and seconds later I was sitting up crying. Sam quickly woke up wondering what the hell was going on.

“Kim – Kimmy – It’s alright – What’s the matter, babe?”

I couldn’t get my words out. I couldn’t breathe. The tightness on my chest was holding me firmly. I was a terrible woman. The town all looked at me with their judgmental eyes. It had only been just over a year and so easily I had forgotten Luke. I’d never forget him.

CHAPTER 25

Samuel

After Kim had left, I tried not to snoop too much around her house. I expected to find photographs and things that belonged to her previous husband, but I only came across a couple of photographs. One of them on her fireplace and the other on her vanity table.

One photograph of them at their wedding and another from their graduation ceremony. I couldn’t remember if she mentioned they met in university. I didn’t know much about her relationship; I was too afraid to ask.

Stealing her shower and changing into a fresh pair of boxers and joggers, I took full opportunity to get into bed, the sheets smelled of her and I instantly fell asleep. I did not however anticipate her waking me up to a flood of tears and in full blown panic mode.

It took me a few seconds to realize what was going on. I wasn’t sure if I was meant to put my arms around her and hug her or leave her alone as she tried to calm herself down. I had seen her like this before, well almost like this. This seemed to be a lot worse than before.

“Kim, what can I do? Do you need me to go? Call someone?”

“No,” she breathed, counting her breath, “Don’t leave. I’m okay.”

“You don’t sound okay.”
