She smiles, then her lips part, and she licks her lips. He bites back the groan, the stab of his fangs in his lip travelling straight to his dick. This is what she does to him every time. He wants her. He needs her. Has for decades, and the all-consuming feelings aren’t going away as much as he wants them to. Or not. Lately, the human feelings he has for Eve are the only things keeping him from letting the darkness take over completely.

But he can’t have her. Can never have her. All he can hope for is to continue like this. Watching.

Pain is the only thing he enjoys. The only thing that excites him. The only thing that arouses him. It’s fucked up. She can’t be a part of that. Never will. He won’t allow it.

That won’t stop him wanting things to be so different. Damon reaches for her, the shadows extending towards her, gently brushing against the side of her face, before he gets a grip of himself again and pulls back.

Eve takes a step back and rubs the side of her face. Then she smiles. It’s barely there, but he could swear he sees it. He watches as she walks away from him, towards the living quarters, glancing over her shoulder once, before she turns the corner.

She knew he was there! But that’s impossible!

Damon considers going after her. The pull towards her is so strong. Common sense is stronger though. He reforms back in his home, if you could even call it that. The period house had been empty for decades and, for some reason, it was assigned to him.

It’s dark, cold, and fucking miserable. But it’s off the beaten track, and somewhere he can be himself, without risk of being discovered.

He holds out his hand in front of him and smiles. The tips of his fingers are still warm after the brief contact with Eve.

He has to stop doing this to himself over and over again.

Needing to distance himself from the pathetic self-pity taking over, he allows the other side of himself to take control. He welcomes the pain of his horns and wings tearing out of his body. It helps to soothe him, to steady his thoughts. He stretches his wings, dragging the talons along the walls to either side of him.

As much as he wants what Nick and Scarlett have, it’s not in his future. Eve isn’t in his future. Not while he’s locked into his contract. No one in their right mind would want something like him.

He flies up to the roof of the house, relishing the feel of the cold wind against his wings. He roars into the night sky, but for the first time it’s not a shout of anger.

It’s of despair.
