‘Can I ask you a ridiculous question?’

He hits her with those magical eyes again and smiles. ‘Peaked my interest now. What ridiculous question do you want to ask?’

‘What exactly crashed? I mean I’m no car expert, but that doesn't look like a car out there embedded in a tree. Is it like one of those trike things?’

‘Something like that,’ he answers, focusing on his soup again.

That’s the end of that topic. This man is equally as infuriating as he is captivating.

‘How’s your book?’

He flashes her a strange look and, when he grins, she can feel her cheeks reddening. ‘My book?’

‘Yeah. You seemed to really be getting in to it before I went outside.’

She nods and spoons some soup into her mouth. She doubts she even turned a page in the damn thing. She glances at him and he’s still giving her the same look. Then he winks and takes a sip of his coffee.

What the hell was he winking at? Did he notice she was paying him more attention than the book? She’s sure he didn’t. So why is he looking at her like he knows something she doesn’t?

‘Yeah. It’s good, thanks. Are you done with your soup?’ she asks, desperate to stop whatever is going on. The way he’s looking at her is unnerving. And really turning her on.

‘Yeah. I’ll get those.’

‘No! Sorry. That was a bit loud. I just meant you’re my guest. You sit and relax. I insist.’ Scarlett quickly gathers the plates and hurries into the kitchen before he can argue. What the hell is going on? And why is she so turned on?

She fills a glass with water and drinks it. It’s a little after midday. She’s got the whole day with him. If he keeps winking and looking at her the way he is, it’s going to be a long and incredibly frustrating day.

‘Why do you keep blushing?’

Scarlett faces Nick. He’s still leaning back in the chair, his legs spread and his head tilted slightly to the side as he stares over at her.

‘What?’ She clears her throat and attempts that again. ‘What?’

‘When I asked about your book, you blushed.’

‘No I didn’t.’

He pauses and frowns, then looks at her again. ‘You weren’t thinking about me, Scarlett, were you?’

Whatever about blushing before, she’s going as bright as a tomato right now. His presence is filling her small cottage, sending her heart fluttering, and quickening her breath. And that’s before she even begins to think about the effect his words are having on her.

Nick leans forward, resting his arms on his legs, his intense gaze sending shivers down her. ‘Were you thinking about me?’

‘What? Of course not!’ Her response sounds weak as soon as she says the words, but she doesn't want to admit the truth.

He leans back in his chair, his legs spread and one hand draped over his thigh. He knows she wants him. She has no idea how, but he knows. ‘Now that was a lie, Scarlett.’ He stands up and walks towards her, stopping at the entrance to the kitchen. His cinnamon scent hits her. ‘I wasn’t going to do this Scarlett, I really wasn’t, I swear. But you’re making it impossible for me.’

‘I’m making what impossible?’

He looks down at the ground for a moment and takes a long breath, almost like he’s deciding if he should continue. And she wants him to. Whatever he’s about to say she needs to hear it.

‘You’re making it impossible not to think about what I could do to you, with you.’

She nods before she can stop herself. ‘I see.’

‘You can feel it too, can’t you? This thing between us.’

She nods again, then swallows, as Nick takes another step closer to her.
