Again he raised his brows. ‘Erm. I hate to point this out, but a few minutes ago you were never going to see me again or get in my car. Are you saying you’ve decided you will now?’

‘I’m freezing. You’re freezing. As you keep saying it’s snowing. And getting heavier in case you haven’t noticed. We’ve already wasted a lot of time. I’d still rather not, but it makes sense. I’ll come with you and if you’ll drop me at home, I can get a tow truck out here.’

‘And then you’ll come to Bed and Bath with me and help me with that gift?’

‘Yes.’

‘You’re too kind, Grace.’

He shook his head and laughed and then he opened the door of her car and held it while she clambered out. She locked her car with the remote and then they walked in silence to his car, and he opened the passenger door to let her in and then closed it behind her.

He turned in his seat and looked at her. ‘I’m still slightly offended that the thought of going to bed with me seems so repulsive to you, Grace. Not today, but one day soon. Very soon. You and I need to have a serious conversation.’

‘Oh? About what?’

She struggled with the seat belt and he reached across and clicked it into place, his arm brushing against her body for a moment and sending a whole new burst of sensations racing through her.

‘Do you really need to ask, Grace?’

He started the car and sped off along the road.

Thirteen

‘Weshouldn’thavewastedso much time,’ Grace said, a few minutes later as she and Griff peered through his snow-covered windscreen and the wipers groaned under the sheer weight of the sudden heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions.

‘And whose fault was that?’

‘Granny Joy said this would happen. She said there’d be a blizzard.’

‘It might’ve been helpful if you shared that snippet of information earlier.’

‘Watch out for black ice. You can’t see it under the snow. There’s a lot of it about.’

‘Thanks,’ he said.

Grace only just spotted the warning road sign.

‘There’s a bend up ahead. You might want to slow down.’

‘I can read road signs too, thanks.’

‘Yet you’re not slowing down.’

‘I’m driving at a sensible speed.’

‘Really? It seems a bit fast to me in this weather.’

He stopped the car, swivelled slightly in his seat and slung his left arm onto the back of the passenger seat and looked Grace in the eye. ‘Would you like to drive, Grace?’

‘Erm. No thanks.’

‘Are you sure?’

She nodded. ‘Yes.’

‘Then is it okay if I continue?’

She nodded again. ‘But … maybe … just a little slower? I would like to get home in one piece.’
