He sucked in a breath and moved the car forward at a slower speed.

At the next bend, she opened her mouth to speak and a little sort of grunt came out. Griff turned his head slightly to look at her, and Grace saw something dart across the road in front of them.

‘Look out,’ she shouted, and instinctively grabbed for the wheel.

Griff swerved to avoid what appeared to be a fox but in the confusion, the vehicle plunged into a ditch at the edge of the narrow section of road. It was about a foot deep.

‘Are we stuck?’ Grace asked, as Griff tried to get the vehicle to shift.

‘We might be.’

‘I told you, you were going too fast. So much for all terrain vehicles being better than my car.’

‘This’ll cope with almost anything, including driving into a ditch, but driving headfirst into a narrow ditch like this, isn’t one of them.’

Nevertheless, he tried. He gunned the engine and the vehicle moved a fraction but not enough to make a difference.

‘I can’t get enough traction.’

‘So we are stuck then?’

‘Yes.’

‘You could push it out of the ditch, perhaps?’ Grace suggested.

He quirked a brow. ‘Oh can I? What happened to equality? What would you be doing while I’m using my superhuman strength?’

Grace frowned. ‘Steering, of course. Someone needs to make sure it doesn’t run away once it’s out of the ditch.’

He sniggered at that. ‘Sorry. I was just envisioning it growing legs and dashing off.’ He coughed and adopted a serious demeanour. ‘The ground is flat here, so I don’t think it’d go anywhere, but although I’m fairly strong, there’s no chance of me budging this an inch on my own.’

‘What if I help?’

‘Unless you’ve been hiding some super power all these years, I think that’s still a no.’

‘Well we’ve got to do something. We can’t just sit here. We could freeze to death. People do, you know. There’s still no signal on your phone, I assume?’

‘No. We’re not far from home. Probably three or four miles. We could walk.’

‘In this weather? Are you mad? We can’t see more than six inches in front of us. We could go round in circles. Or … or walk straight off the cliff!’

‘I wasn’t suggesting we go now. This blizzard blew in fast. It might blow itself out as quickly.’

‘And if it doesn’t?’

He looked her in the eye. ‘Then I’ll go for help. I can use the GPS on my phone.’

‘But there’s no signal!’

‘GPS uses satellites, not mobile phone towers. The blizzard and the surrounding trees shouldn’t affect the signal much on my phone, but it’s not the same as a map, so it’s still not ideal.’

‘You can’t leave me here alone. What if you get lost? Or worse. What if you fall into another ditch? Or get hurt?’

‘I didn’t know you cared, Grace.’ The triumphant smile on his face was more annoying than his sarcasm.

‘I don’t. I was thinking about me. If your attempt to get help fails, I could die out here.’

‘I see. Fine. Then I think we should wait awhile and see what happens. Another vehicle might come along and spot us.’
