“This week…” The words leave my mouth in a whisper. “What are you doing, David? Are you drinking again?”

Under my fingers, his muscle tense. “Drinking and driving my son?” he argues. “You should know me better than that, Melanie.”

Yes, I know him better than that. But the question still remains in the air. Where the hell has he been spending his time all week? I know they leave the construction site around five, but he comes home around nine, bringing a sleeping Davi with him.

And talking about our son… “Where is Davi?”

“With your father,” he replies. “We are picking him up in a while.”

Of course, I’ve asked my father and sister, just in case they know anything about David’s whereabouts. Their lips are sealed. So frustrating.

“Then what?” I bulge a little bit more. “Are you regretting this already?”

He lets out a sigh. “I won’t honor that crazy statement with an answer.”

“Tell me,” I say and lift my head from his chest to look at those dark eyes I love so much. “Tell me, David.”

“We are visiting my father this weekend, and I’ve been working extra hours with the judge’s approval to get a couple of days off and take you two there.”

“Wait, what?” I’m panicking already. We are traveling when, now?

“Yes, I told my father about Davi and you. He is looking forward to meeting you,” he says. “The jet is waiting for us at the regional airport.”

The jet? What does that mean? Aren’t wet flying commercially?

Well, duh, Melanie. Millionaires don’t waste their time in a crowded airport mingling with the general population.

“We should get moving.” I hear him, but I don’t want to leave this warm little place. Visiting his family scares me. What will his father think of me? The girl who got pregnant with the family’s black sheep on a crazy night and never cared to ask for his last name.

“David, I’m not sure if I’m ready to do this,” I murmur.

“To leave the shower? We should. The hot water is about to run out, and I don’t want you to get cold again.”

“David…” He’s being deliberately obtuse. Leaving the bathroom doesn’t worry me.

“My father is gonna love you,” he assures me. “I’ve told him about you and your family. About Davi and how you have been raising him. Trust me,” he finishes with a little squeeze.

Trusting him isn’t an issue, but other people’s behavior could be unpredictable.

“Trust me, Melanie,” he assures me again. “This will be the first time I go back home after everything….” His voice gets lost in the water noise. We have discussed the reasons he grew apart from his siblings, and my chest aches for him again. There is so much pain to heal. David needs forgiveness, not just from Martin and Destinee, but from himself.

“I’ll go with you,” I say, looking at his dark eyes and then giving him a little peek. “We are going with you.”

Our little family. His family.

Chapter Seventeen

David

“Where is the plane, Daddy?” Davi asks me for the millionth time in the last hour. We are driving West on the freeway heading for Palomar Regional Airport in Carlsbad, where my company jet is waiting for us.

“You will see soon,” I say again. My son is a chatterbox, always curious, and always eager to know more. Seeing the world through his eyes amazes me, and I am still learning to navigate this vast ocean of parenting.

“How long, Daddy?” he asks, and this time Melanie cuts him off.

“Daddy told you, Davi. Are you hungry? We can stop to get you something.”

“I want to see the plane,” he replies. His adamant tone makes me smile.
