I didn’t much care for complimenting others—especially these assholes—but Vance wasn’t wrong. Tor had gone all out, making a delicious Italian meal. Pasta, breaded chicken cutlets, even fresh bread from scratch. The bastard could whip up one hell of a meal when he wanted to. In fact, even if I’d wanted to hide out and keep to myself, the smell of this food alone would have drawn me out.

Kenz looked over at Tor and gave him a soft smile. “Well, thanks. It’s really good.”

Tor nodded, though a softness in his eyes sat at odds with his otherwise blank expression.

So the kitten can charm even that killer?

Then again, from what I’d heard about the Quad, it seemed she’d been charming killers her whole damned life.

I couldn’t get that out of my head, either. I knewallabout the Quad. Given I worked as a conman, I’d run across them a number of times. Never in person, never as their enemy, since I was far too smart to make a mistake that stupid. I wasn’t a killer generally, at least not outright, but they were. They had no problem removing obstacles, which meant I’d kept myself from becoming their enemy.

And to think Kenz hadlivedwith them, that she saw them like big brothers?

She really is a blind fool, isn’t she?

“Stop sighing.”

I lifted my gaze to find Kenz frowning at me. “I wasn’t.”

“Yes, you were. You’ve sighed at least six times since we’ve sat down.”

“I’m just breathing,” I snapped and shoved a piece of bread that was reallyfartoo large into my mouth. I chewed and chewed, but quickly it became obvious I’d really overdone it because she’d flustered me.

I grabbed for my glass of water to help wash down the wad of bread, coughing for a moment, and worse? When I lifted my gaze, I found Kenz struggling and failing miserably to hide her laughter.

“So are we just going to ignore all this?” I blurted out since the whole pretend and act mature thing wasn’t going well.

“Char…” Hayden warned, censure in his tone.

“No. We’re stuck together for another few weeks. We’re supposed to rely on one another, so we can’t just fucking pretend shit wasn’t said.”

Red colored Kenz’s cheeks, and fuck did that drew me in. I wanted to pull the neckline of her sweater to the side and see just how far down that flush went. Some women, when they came, ended up with their skin pinkened over their chest, their throat, their back.

Kenz had pale skin—would she blush like that?

Focus! If I’d learned one thing in my years of being other people, of reading other people, it was that nothing good came out of a person’s mouth when their cock was hard. There was some truth to the old saying that a man could only operate one at a time, and it was wherever the blood was.

“There’s no reason to do this here,” Vance said, a surprising amount of kindness for the notorious playboy. Then again, he might throw women away quick, but he was still nice to them until that point.

Who would have figured that a gentleman man whore existed?

“Of course there is,” I said. “She needs to understand where we all stand. We’re stuck together for now, and it’ll only hurt her to keep this fantasy of hers.”

“You really are an asshole,” Hayden muttered softly, but he didn’t stop me.

Because I was right. He knew it even if he didn’t like it. A moment now to get it all out in the open would hurtfarless than letting her continue like this, than letting her fall any deeper into this delusion of hers.

I looked directly at Kenz, and her expression said she knew exactly what I wanted to say. Then again, the girl was smarter than most people would have figured at first glance. “You know we had that bug on you, which means we heard what you said.”

“Yeah, I know. You know who I really am.”

“I saideverything.” I lifted my eyebrow to call her out.

She blew out a sharp, unhappy breath. “Hayden’s right. You reallyarean asshole.”

“Yeah, I really am. This is the real me, so deal with it. You don’t love us, Kenz.”

“You don’t get to tell me how I feel.”
