Tears welled up in his eyes, and he nodded vigorously, his voice trembling as he replied, "I won't. I swear."

Just for good measure, I slammed his head against the brick and then reluctantly loosened my hold on him, allowing him to stumble away a few steps. Without another word, he turned and fled into the night, his footsteps echoing with desperation.

Wipe the footage, I texted my team, making sure the cameras around the theater were cleared of all evidence.

Satisfied that my message had been received, I took a step towards the theater, before remembering I still had work to do to make sure there weren’t any more rats working within my organization.

Just one more look.

A reward for a job well done…

I’d just gotten inside when she came out of the theater. She stared around, probably looking for her date. When she didn’t see any sign of him, her gaze took on a resigned expression…but it didn’t look like she was actually upset.

Kennedy, with her dark brown hair cascading down her back and those enchanting light green eyes, had always been the most gorgeous girl I had ever seen. I’d been spellbound from the moment I laid eyes on her.

Sebastian threw his arm around me and I shrugged it off, hating affection of any kind. We were standing in the lobby of the local arena, just finished with an unofficial practice with our club team.

"I just spent two hours with you," I drawled. "Why are you hugging me?"

"We're friends," Sebastian said with a smirk.

"Are we?" I asked, knowing it drove him crazy.

"Since preschool,” he sighed, tightening his hold around my shoulders.

"I guess we must be," I said, in a resigned voice, "because otherwise, you'd already be dead."

“That’s Greyson,” a girl’s voice whispered from behind us, and I turned, wanting to know who was talking about me.

And that’s when I saw her.

A goddess if I’d ever seen one.

Long, wavy black hair that I immediately wanted to tangle my fingers in as I fucked her from behind.

And those eyes, seagreen and soulful, like she’d seen darkness so she wouldn’t be scared of mine.

“Dibbs,” Sebastian whispered in my ear. But I didn’t pay attention to him. Because that sure as fuck wasn’t happening.

Sebastian flirted with her…but I’d felt tongue-tied. Not the greatest first impression, but I’d make it up to her.

That meeting had stoked an obsession inside me, a flame that burned brighter with each passing day.

"Hey there," I had said the next day at school, my voice oozing confidence as I stepped into her path.

Kennedy's light green eyes widened in surprise, and her cheeks flushed with a hint of embarrassment. "Oh…hi."

Memories, most of them painful because they meant so much, came flooding back as I watched her stand in the lobby before finally sighing and returning to the theater.

My phone buzzed, and I didn’t have to look at it to know it was Sunny, wondering when I was going to be back.

“See you soon, pretty girl,” I murmured, texting the new security I’d put on her to let me know everything that happened tonight.

See. You. Soon.

The arena was alive with energy as I made my way through the private suites, serving drinks and snacks to the excited fans. Dressed in a crisp black uniform with the team's logo, I shakily balanced a tray laden with drinks, maneuvering through the lively crowd. This particular suite belonged to one of the team's sponsors, and the fans in here were a little crazy.
