“Everything okay?” I asked, a little shame peeking into my voice about what a shithole I lived in compared to their place.

“I could pick that lock with a toothpick, baby. We have to get you a better door.” The anger dissipated when he looked down at me, his voice gentle.

“I’m not sure the landlord would be cool with a new door. We’ve been asking for better security for years, but he knows he has the best price in town—so it is what it is,” I explained, grabbing his hand to lead him out to the street.

I thought I heard him say something like “we’ll see,” but I decided to let it go.

Once we got to the sidewalk, I glanced around for the silver sedan he’d driven me home in last night. Instead, Carter led me towards a black Maserati that stuck out like a sore thumb in my shitty neighborhood. The sleek, low-slung sports car gleamed under the soft glow of the streetlights, and I was relieved to see it still had all of its wheels on it.

You never knew in this neighborhood. He and Greyson were brave to bring their cars here.

The car's body was a deep, glossy black, the polished chrome accents catching the light and creating a dazzling effect.

“I love this car,” I whispered, and Carter’s hand squeezed mine. When I glanced at him, he looked torn.

“What is it?”

He shook his head. “Nothing,” he murmured. I kept in my eye roll. Someday I would get ahold of all their secrets.

Someday.

Carter held the door open for me, and I slid into the plush leather seats, feeling a little bit like I was about to come. It was so freaking nice.

Carter got in, and the engine roared to life with a powerful growl, sending a thrill through me. An awkward giggle came out of my mouth—that was more of a moan.

I was an embarrassment, but this car was really, really hot.

“Something told me you were a Maserati kind of girl,” he mused as he took my hand and set it on the gearshift, switching gears with his hand on top of mine.

Oh…I liked that.

There was a universal hot guy code of conduct, and somehow, the four men who’d swept into my life all seemed to know it.

Judging by Carrie’s stories, and the few miserable dates I’d been on in the last five years, they were the lucky few who did.

Or I was the lucky one, I should say…

“Where are we going?” I asked as he sped through the streets.

”You’ll see,” he said with a wink that made my panties a little damp.

Honestly, sue me for being basic, but I wasn’t sure what girl could resist the charm Carter was giving me tonight.

“You guys go back on the road in two weeks, right?” I asked, feeling ridiculously forlorn about it. The arena would be quiet while they were gone.

He glanced over at me, frowning. “Yeah, unfortunately we do.”

“Unfortunately?”

“It’s a week we’ll be gone. I’m not exactly happy to be missing out on that time with you.”

Seriously, was this how it was for every girl, once they met “the one.” Or maybe “the four,” I should say?

I was very aware there were lots of red flags flapping around these guys, but I was having trouble remembering they were red with every sweet thing that came out of their mouths.

The universal curse for all womankind, I was sure.

Carter skillfully navigated us to the heart of downtown. Towering skyscrapers reached for the night sky, their illuminated lights creating a mesmerizing contrast against the darkness.
