It was almost two weeks before she heard from Emily again and they set up a time on Tuesday for her to come into the office.

This time, she showed up as agreed and apologized again for canceling.

“I didn’t want to get into it on the phone, but Jim’s mother had been rushed to the hospital with a heart attack. We didn’t know anything more than that at that point. It turned out she had some major blockages and needed a quadruple bypass. She came through the surgery well and is recuperating at home. It was scary though. We couldn’t focus on anything else as you can imagine.”

Sophie nodded. “I’m so glad she’s doing well now.”

They went into one of the smaller conference rooms and Sophie offered Emily a cup of the fluffy coffee and she was intrigued. Sophie quickly made one for each of them and, as they sipped their coffee, she jotted down notes about what Emily was ideally looking for.

“We want this to be our forever property. The one we are in is lovely, but it only has three bedrooms and one of those is used as an office. So, the children have to share, and we just desperately need more space. I’d love five or six bedrooms if possible because we need that home office and I’d love a guest room for when his parents or mine come to visit. And we might have one or possibly two more kids. The thought of moving again, is too exhausting to consider,” she said dramatically, and Sophie smiled.

“Moving is awful,” she agreed. “What about location? You mentioned you like the area by the Met ideally?”

Emily nodded. “Yes, somewhere along Fifth Avenue, walking distance to the Met. That’s what we have now, and we love it. We just need more space.”

“And you mentioned a range ideally of the mid to upper teens? But possibly you could go to twenty if something was really perfect?”

“Yes. Obviously, we’d prefer not to go to twenty if we don’t have to. But we could. Jim was made a partner a few years ago and that changed our income significantly. We’ll be paying cash, as well.”

Sophie swallowed at that. She couldn’t fathom having twenty million sitting in a bank account readily available for apartment buying. But she knew how lucrative the hedge fund industry was and how Jim’s yearly salary now that he was a partner could be well in excess of ten million.

“Excellent. Well, I pulled a few ideas together and based on what you are looking for, we have five properties that you might want to consider. One of them is a new listing that just came in this week. They are all impressive properties. I would recommend seeing all of them and then you can let me know what you think and if we need to refine the search.”

Emily took a quick look at the listings and agreed to see all but one, which was the smallest and least expensive.

“They all look intriguing. I have to admit, I’m especially curious to see the newest one, I’ve been in that building and it’s stunning.” She was talking about Caroline’s new listing and Sophie had to agree. It was special.

“Great, I’ll see about setting up some showings. What days and times work best?”

Emily thought for a moment. “I’m available the rest of the week any day before noon and on Saturday, Jim could come with me. I’d like to see them all this week if at all possible.”

“I’ll make some calls and let you know as soon as I hear from the sellers.” Sophie tried to keep the excitement out of her voice. She wanted to project confidence, and the illusion that she dealt with properties of this caliber regularly.

She walked Emily out and they passed Tessa and Caroline in the hallway. Sophie noticed that both of her roommates’ eyes were drawn to Emily’s elegant outfit. She was wearing a gorgeous, ivory-colored, long wool coat, her hair was pulled back into an elegant low ponytail and her lipstick was a vibrant red that made her pale skin look pink and rosy. And she wore a black quilted Louis Vuitton crossbody bag that contrasted perfectly with the coat.

“Thanks for coming in, Emily,” Sophie said.

Emily smiled. “I really appreciate that you rescheduled. I look forward to seeing these homes and any other new ones that might come in.”

Sophie went back to the bullpen and walked over to Caroline’s and Tessa’s desks which were next to each other. They both looked up and Tessa spoke first.

“Was that a new buyer? What range is she looking in?”

Sophie smiled. “She’s ideally targeting mid to high teens but could go to twenty for something amazing.”

Caroline’s jaw dropped. “Where did you find her?”

“She’s in my training class for volunteers at the Met.” She told them about Emily and her hedge fund husband. “She’s really nice and they just need a bigger place.”

Caroline’s eyes lit up. “My new listing might be perfect.”

“I told her about both of your listings, and she wants to set up showings.”

“I can’t believe you might have a buyer for my listing.” Tessa really seemed shocked. She snapped out of it fast though. “I’ll call them now.”

Chapter Thirty

Sophie booked showings for Emily every day for the rest of the week, with the last two on Saturday. The ones they saw during the week were all on the lower end of her range, around fifteen and sixteen million. They were impressive homes and Emily took lots of pictures as they walked through and seemed to like all of them.
