“Yes, sort of. I knew one of the guys at my table was thinking about selling his unit. I’m on the board of my co-op and that’s who was at my table, a few of the other board members. He’s not quite ready to put it on the market, but he’s almost there and had a lot of questions. So, we’ll see what happens.”

“Oh, good luck.”

“Thanks. It would be a sweet listing. He has the top two floors of our building, it’s probably high thirties maybe even a forty million dollar listing. His unit is spectacular.”

The numbers that Sophie often heard made her head spin. “What does he do that he can afford something like that?”

Rick laughed. “Family money. He’s never had a real job. Just manages his family trusts and, to his credit, they’ve tripled under his watch. He makes millions yearly just on the interest.”

“Wow.”

“Yeah, not a bad gig. But this can be incredible too. I hit eight figures in personal income this year. That could be you someday, too, Sophie if you stay with it.”

Sophie couldn’t imagine hitting seven figures let alone eight. She just nodded.

When the song ended, she had to fight back another yawn. It was after ten on a Tuesday and she was suddenly exhausted. She glanced over at the table where Emily was sitting and saw that they were standing by the table and Jim was helping her with her long coat. Sophie and Rick walked over to them.

“We were just about to head out. This was a fun night, though,” Emily said. “Sophie, have a great Thanksgiving, and I’ll talk to you soon.”

“We could head out too, if you’re ready?” Rick suggested.

“Sure, I’ll just get my coat.”

Five minutes later, they were walking outside. The wind had picked up and the snow was coming down fast and furious. The ground was starting to get slippery, and Sophie walked carefully. Rick chatted as they walked, telling her all about the people at his table and some of the other clients he’d run into.

“I try never to miss this event. It’s the best networking in the city. Where else can you find this many powerful people in one place?”

When they reached Sophie’s building, Rick pulled her in for a quick hug. “Thanks for coming with tonight, Sophie. See you in the morning?”

“Thank you. And yes, see you tomorrow.”

Sophie smiled as she walked into the building and said hello to Walter, the night doorman. It had been an interesting evening and she was relieved that Rick’s interest in her seemed to just be professional. She found him attractive, but really didn’t think of him romantically and she knew that dating her boss could be very messy. Things were going so well now, that she didn’t want anything to ruin that.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Caroline and Tessa were still up when Sophie got home. They were both in their pajamas, watching Netflix and Caroline was yawning. She usually went to bed earlier than this.

“I was just about to give up on you and head to bed,” Caroline teased. “How did it go?”

Sophie shrugged her coat off and hung it on the wrought iron rack by the door. When she kicked off her heels her feet instantly felt relief.

“It was really fun. Emily was there, so it was nice to see a familiar face. Rick knew so many people.”

“Did he introduce you to everyone?” Tessa asked. Her expression was difficult to read.

Sophie nodded. “Yes, to so many that I won’t possibly be able to remember all of their names.”

“How was the food and the outfits? Did you see a lot of gorgeous gowns?” Caroline asked. The question made Sophie smile.

“Yes, and the food was great. We had lobster, caviar and baked Alaska.”

“Yum! Baked Alaska, that sounds like something my grandmother would have served,” Caroline said.

“I know! I thought the same. It was really good, though. Better than I expected.”

“So, are you and Rick dating now?” Tessa asked. There was an edge to her voice almost as if Sophie had done something wrong.

“No. This was just a work event. He’d bought a ticket for Julia but at the last minute she couldn’t go,” Sophie said.
