“We’re thinking almost a year from now, in June. I think this fall, when our year is up, I’m going to move in with Ed, so we can save some money and hopefully buy something together not long after we get married. But I can stay longer if you need me to?”

Sophie grinned. “I’ll miss having you as a roommate, but you won’t be far away. And I think I feel confident now that I’ll be able to cover the monthly fees from my commissions.” Sophie had been over the moon when she received her first commission check just after Christmas. And she’d been saving as much as possible since then, to have an emergency fund in case she hit a slow stretch with no closings.

“Good! And Tessa’s wedding will be first, on New Year’s Eve,” Caroline said.

The save-the-date cards had come earlier that week. Tessa and Cody had reunited on Christmas Eve when he invited her to dinner and proposed. She’d moved in with him immediately. Caroline had been a little horrified that she was breaking her lease, but Sophie didn’t mind. She thought of the old saying, ‘two’s company, three’s a crowd.’ She was much closer with Caroline, and it was definitely more peaceful once Tessa moved out.

And Sophie found that she got on better with Tessa once she was gone, too. She was less stressed out now that she was back with Cody and engaged. She was out of her slump at work too, once she found a buyer for that huge listing.

“You’re next,” Caroline said, once they were inside and Sophie was pouring them both a glass of chardonnay.

Sophie smiled. Things were going so well with Max, and she could see it moving toward an engagement possibly, but neither one of them were in a hurry.

“Maybe someday. I’m just really happy with how things are going now. It’s actually nice having him right next door. We spend a lot of time together, as you know, but I like having my own place.”

“Do you think you’ll ever want to sell the apartment? Maybe move in with Max?” Caroline asked.

“Maybe he’ll move in with me! We haven’t talked about either option yet. Whatever we do though, I don’t see myself selling it. Not anytime soon. I love it there. I feel like it’s where I was meant to be,” Sophie said.

Caroline held up her glass of wine and clinked it against Sophie’s. “Cheers to that. And to many happy times ahead in your Fifth Avenue apartment.”

Max walked up behind Sophie and pulled her in for a quick kiss. He grinned. “I heard that last bit and couldn’t agree more. Best thing that happened to me was when you moved in next door.”

Sophie sighed as she looked around at her friends and family. Her life had changed so much in the past year. She lifted her glass again and made a new toast. “To Aunt Penny and her fabulous Fifth Avenue apartment. Because of her, I made a new best friend, found my dream job, and fell in love with my next-door-neighbor.”
