Slowly, the shadow at my entrance presses inside. It widens as it strokes, perfectly phallic-shaped, as he pauses to make sure I’m okay. When I begin to writhe beneath him, desperate for more, his shadows start to move. They stroke inside me, gentle as can be, while others twist around my nipples, tugging and caressing. They cover every inch of me.

It’s been so long that my orgasm rises embarrassingly fast. I gasp, trying to hold on, my eyes clamping shut as the feeling rushes over me. My skin tingles, my body vibrates, and I can’t—

“Open your eyes, little oblivion,” he growls.

The shadows on my nipples verge on the edge of pain with the command, and I open my eyes again. Our gazes meet, and everything inside me shatters. I cry out, my back arching off the ground as the wave crashes over me. I tear at the grass, my legs shaking with the intense feeling as Rook purrs above me.

“There it is,” he growls, his hand coming up to stroke my waist. “Beautiful. So beautiful.” He leans down and inhales, as if my own darkness is intoxicating to him. Perhaps it is.

I collapse against the ground, my body aching from my orgasm, but he was right.

The moment I can think again, I yearn for him, for more, for everything.

He grins and presses another kiss against my lips. When he pulls away, I can still taste the shadows.

“Damn you.” I laugh and hug him close, amused by his tactics.

He freezes for a second, as if surprised by my embrace, and then he wraps his arms around me.

“Do you want to go see her?” he asks against my hair. “Your sister?”

My heart flutters as my arms tighten around him. Fear trickles back in—fear of her pain, fear of facing the guilt. “Not yet,” I whisper. “Not yet.”

Shadows, I can’t face her yet.

Chapter

Forty-Two

KAI

Life is good. I’m happy.

I’m growing closer to my men every day. They touch me now, unafraid to reach for me, and I don’t flinch. I enjoy their caresses and attention, and under it all is that fiery desire we are all trying to resist. Why, I don’t know, but I do know one day it, will snap.

I should have known nothing can stay good forever, though, because where there is happiness, there is pain. That is something I know all too well.

I feel it this morning when I wake up. Something is amiss in the air, a sense of wrongness. It’s clear my guys feel it as well. They are on edge, their eyes sharp. They do not let me out of their sight, even when I bathe. I can’t put my finger on why I’m on edge, but when I scan the forest, the hair on the back of my neck rises.

“Let’s head back,” I murmur, dressing quickly after my bath and taking Kaito’s hand. He escorts me back, the others already outside watching, as if they feel it too.

Once back in the cabin, I find my eyes wandering to the door as I stir the stew we are cooking for breakfast. My body is onalert, an old survival instinct that I learned to trust. I used to lie in my dark room in the castle and would always know the king was coming. I trusted it when I still lived in my father’s house and his fits of rage would strike. It kept me alive more than once, and I know well enough to trust it now.

Something is wrong. Something is coming.

We are in danger.

“Something is wrong,” I tell them sternly as I turn from the stew, and I don’t know if it’s my tone or the way I stand with my eyes on the wooden door, but they instantly surround me. Weyland snarls, Kaito holds me, Dade stomps in agitation, and Rook’s shadows dance protectively around us.

“I feel it too,” Weyland agrees. “Something is in the air.” He lifts his head, inhaling deeply.

“Anything?” Dade demands, trusting my and Weyland’s instincts, working as a team.

When Weyland’s eyes open wide, I know I was right. “Human hunters,” he snarls, turning to us. “Surrounding us. Move now!”

I don’t know how they snuck up on us, nor do we have time to debate it. If Weyland says we need to move, then we need to move, and fast.

“How many?” Rook asks as his shadows increase until we are obscured by them. Kaito’s hand finds mine, holding tight as he tugs me next to him protectively.
