Blonde and orange.

Two halves of the same soul.

With the black crown placed upon her head and the smile she shoots Cora, I feel my knees weaken.

My girl is phenomenal. More so, she is the perfect queen, and I will follow her forever.

As they rise as one,my shadows retreat to allow them this moment.

They shine brightly together, filled with a magic so strong, it makes them shine. These two sisters were born into anger and pain, but they found their way to love and happiness. They weren’t given opportunities or hope, yet here they are, and now they fight for everyone like them.

Kai winks at me and turns to face the crowd once more. “I thank you for your kindness. I will try with everything in me to deserve this honor, and it is an honor, but know this—we may wear crowns, but it’s all of you who are the heart of this land. You are the reason we stand here. You are the future. You are the hope.”

“Now, let’s celebrate!” Cora calls, and chants and shouts break out as both sisters laugh.

Cora leans in, kisses her sister’s cheek, and offers her hand to us before turning to her own mates. I hurry over before the others can, stepping to my little oblivion’s side where I belong.

She takes my arm and leans in. “I want you to fuck me with your shadows later while I wear only this crown.”

I almost stumble as I lead her from the throne room, my head whipping around to meet her laughing eyes. She winks at me, and the growl that erupts from me is pure beast as her head is thrown back with mirth. I wrap the shadows around us and bend down, quickly hoisting her over my shoulder and speeding from the room with them chasing after us.

Her laughter echoes across the kingdom, her hands gripping my back, and a smile curves my lips—one only she can put there.

She made the boogeyman fall and made the shadows whole once more, and as the kingdom breaks out in celebration, so do we.

As one.

As mates.

As forever.

Epilogue

KAI

Months later…

Our lands are still healing. War and hatred can’t be erased overnight. There are still those against the unification of monsters and humans, and we make sure we always address that, but for the most part, people just want to get on with their lives.

As soon as they realized the monsters were not here to pillage and kill, most even started to accept them. Monster-run businesses are booming across the lands, and some humans even live in the newly healing Dead Lands, exploring it and mapping what was once uncharted.

Matings between humans and monsters have also increased, with the motto love is love becoming an almost kingdom-wide mantra.

And us?

I can’t complain. I have four mates who love me no matter what. They hold me when the nightmares invade, sing me back to sleep, and stand by my side every day. I don’t know what thefuture holds, but I know it’s bright, and for the first time since I stood on that tower, I don’t regret living.

I’m glad I did.

I would have missed so much.

Maybe it’s my memories that bring me here, but I find myself in the Shadow Lands, standing right before the place where our house once stood.

I don’t know what happened to my mother or father, and I suppose that should worry me, but it doesn’t. As I stare at the brand-new house standing where our shack once did, all I feel is happiness. I am happy it’s gone and glad they are gone too.

They were never parents. My mother was a weak, scared woman who wouldn’t even risk herself to protect her daughters, and my father was a cruel man. It’s better that they are gone and forgotten, and as I turn away from the new house holding a hopeful family, I vow it will be the last time I think of them.

I have my own family now, a real one, and Cora and I never needed them anyway. Sometimes, you can’t forgive, but it doesn’t mean you can’t forget. You can move on without forgiveness, and that is what I do.
