Turning away, I take my mates’ hands and walk proudly toward our future, never once looking back.

My eyes scan the words, even as my heart knows them better than my own name.

“. . . and so it ended the way it began, with two sisters, their hearts filled with love and hope for the future. The end.”

Shutting the gilded book that Kaito and I meticulously wrote and illustrated, I lift my eyes to the gathered children before me.I often come into the lands to heal and, yes, sometimes read, and today is one of those days.

“Again, Queen Kai!” they plead as their parents watch on with happy smiles where we are gathered in the little square in the Shadow Lands.

Chuckling, I stand, holding the book to my heart. My gaze lands on my mates at the back of the crowd, and my grin grows. Cora blows me a kiss where she stands with her own mates. We like to visit where we came from, and we even have a house here.

We may be queens, but we will always be peasant girls who grew up running through these fields, and that’s okay. I accept that about me. I accept every part of myself.

Scars and all.

“What happens next?” another child calls, pulling my attention from my family and back to the cross-legged children gathered eagerly before me.

My smile blooms so brightly, I am surprised my lightning doesn’t crackle. “I guess we’ll find out,” I say, looking out over the lands we rule. “We will see what tomorrow brings.”

THE END, MONSTER FUCKERS.
