He lowers himself over me, taking my lips in a deep kiss. When he pulls back, his eyes are closed, one hand in my hair as the other reaches blindly to guide himself to my entrance. “I’ll try.”

My breath catches as he sinks into me, his lips not hesitating to capture mine. He snakes his tongue across my bottom lip, wanting in. I open to him, wrapping my legs up and around his waist to bring him closer.

And as he rocks forward, control melting away, a growl reverberates from deep within his chest. I can’t help but revel in his weight as he falls heavy onto me.

It’s a weight I’d happily drown in.

I want you to remember the dissatisfaction, to resent it, so that I can sink deep inside of you and remind you exactly what we are.

“Don’t be gentle with me, Lance,” I pant. “I want to feel it all… please. Let me feel it all.”

“Scar.”

I tilt my hips up, recoiling when a tremor sucks him deeper.

He growls and grinds down, circling. “Scarlet.”

My mouth drops open, not being able to stop it as another orgasm rattles me to my core.

“Fuck,” he roars, drawing back the slightest bit before driving back in. “Yes. Fuck, yes.”

I continue to ripple around him as he grinds deep and hard, knees dug into the sofa with each lunge forward.

I cling on, my body screaming out at me to drag it away from his blissful torment as my heart wildly dares me to stay, wrapped around him for a lifetime.

As our sweat bleeds into rivers and the world ceases to exist around us.

As he takes that little bit more of my soul.

I cling on.

THIRTY-FOUR

Lance

It’s clear from the moment I crack open an eye that Scarlet isn’t in bed with me. Disappointment has me reaching out a hand, smoothing over the cold sheet.

I was worried it would be impossible to get her into bed last night, her need to make everything perfect for the ball keeping her out on the grounds until past eleven o’clock most nights this week. Fortunately, her legs had long given up on her by the time I picked her up from the sofa in the library and carried her upstairs, promising to help her finish the final touches first thing this morning when she complained.

You’d think we didn’t have our friends and family here to help us.

We do.

Megan flew home last week and has been holed up here since. Lucy and Elliot have been over daily, Elliot taking the week off to help in any way needed. And Charlie and Lissie have been staying in the lake house to be close by.

It’s been a long week of trying to make everything exactly how Scar wants it to be, and I’m fucking ruined.

I sigh into my pillow before sitting up and scrubbing at my face.

Only when something smooth and cool grazes my cheek, I pull my hands away, looking into my cupped palms at the gold band that hugs my ring finger on my left hand.

I flip it over, frowning.

“The fuck.”

The ring is thick, the polished surface flawless.

I snap my gaze up, my heart falling through my ass when I find the white bouquets of flowers Scarlet and I have spent the week putting together littered around our bedroom.
