Tossing back the covers, I stand from the bed, walking to our wardrobe where a tuxedo is hung on the door, a card tucked into the pocket.

I pluck it out, hands shaking. My heart…

I know I don’t make this easy but…

Will you be hopelessly fucking wild with me, Lance?

This time, forever.

You know where to find me.

Your sunshine. x

I lift a hand to rub across my chest as I read the words over and over, the sound of the string quartet already playing somewhere close by finally registering.

Without a moment’s hesitation, I head for the shower, making sure to take my time as I wash, shave, and trim my beard.

The tuxedo fits me inch perfect, the inside lined with lavender silk.

When did she do all of this?

How did she hide it from me?

Once ready, I take one fleeting glance at myself in the mirror and make my way from the room and down the landing, running my hands through my hair as a ball of energy churns in my stomach.

I take the stairs, looking around the silent house with no idea where anyone is.

You know where to find me.

I swallow and smooth my hands down the front of my tux, my heart feeling like it could break through my chest at any minute.

Pulling back my shoulders, I reach forward, dragging open the heavy wooden doors that lead outside. The moment I spot the figures on the hilltop, the kids running, I smile.

I take off across the terrace, walking on shaky legs for the first field. As I near Ellis’s garden, the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end right before I spot Mason in his bests, stood with a drink in hand at the gate.

“You’re late,” he tells me, a smile growing.

I stop, my throat growing tight. This is it. This is really happening.“I was only just invited,” I tell him.

He downs the last of his drink, emotion swimming in his eyes as he nods for me to keep going.

I stare past him into the garden, not being able to see shit but knowing.

She’s in there.

I know she is.

I walk backward a couple of steps before pocketing my hands and stalking through the fields and up the hill.

When I reach the top, breathing eludes me, and I come to a stop.

Our flowers decorate the lakefront, a small number of chairs set either side of an aisle that leads to the dock.

“Uncle Lance!”

I snap my head to the right, catching Sammy running for me. I pick him up, searching behind him. I see Ralph and Ellis, but no one else. “Hey, mate. Lads,” I say to the boys.

“You’re late,” Ellis tells me.
