Closing my eyes, I sink into the soft duvet, not hopeful that sleep will come.

The sound of a fist pounding flesh echoes through the walls.

Thuds.

Grunts.

The guards.

Doors.

Doors banging and banging.

Screaming.

Shouting.

Crying.

“Fuck,” I grit out, fisting my hand at my sides.

Stop.

Stop.

Please, stop.

It doesn’t. Even confined behind the locked door, it doesn’t go away. There’s no way to block it out. No way to escape it.

Another door bangs, and I flinch, my heart jarring in my chest. Sweat forms on my brow, the sound of the guards shuffling outside my door.

I swipe at my forehead, frustration at my inability to not let it affect me. That bang. It makes me feel sick to my stomach every damn time.

Stop.

Please.

You’re safe.

You’re—

I hear the lock unlatch and bolt up in my bed, my eyes wide as I search for the door.

The blue door.

Instead, I find Scarlet, her smile falling from her lips as she runs her eyes over me.

My heart pounds so hard in my chest I can feel it in my shoulders, like a drum beating throughout my entire body. I open my mouth, sucking in a rush of air.

I snap my eyes to the window, finding it light outside.

A bead of sweat runs down my slick back, my hair sticking to my temples.

“Lance?”

I shake my head, covering my face in my cupped hands.

No.
