“Someone is here.”

Kingston didn’t need the warning since he’d felt it the same time Autumn did. However, unlike his mate, he knew exactly who waited outside the protective barrier surrounding the property.

He nuzzled his face against her neck, silently cursing the fact that he couldn’t just lay there and enjoy the afterglow of their love play. Any interruption that intruded on his time with his mate irritated the hell out of him, but this particular visitor was someone he couldn’t ignore.

“It’s my grandfather.”

“Go,” she said, pushing at his shoulders. “Go talk to him.”

“Come with me.”

She shook her head slowly. “I think it’s best that you speak to him alone first. I’ll come join you in a little bit. Maybe I’ll hop in the shower first. You do have showers here in the Hell Realm, right?”

“We do, and with non-glowing water.”

She let out an exaggerated sigh. “That’s a relief.”

He grinned at her sass. “You could just use magic.”

“I know, but sometimes I just like doing things the old-fashioned way. Like baking,” she reminded. “It’s comforting for me.”

“You do whatever you want, my little goddess.” He leaned down and kissed her lips and the tip of her nose before he got up. It pained him to leave her to enjoy a hot shower without him, but he would make do.

Using magic, he cleaned and dressed himself in a black button-down shirt and matching pants. He could already picture the disapproving frown his grandfather would give him for leaving his shirt untucked, and the very thought of that made him want to smile. While he’d deserved his fair share of scolding for his past behavior, he freely admitted that he had also purposely done things to earn a lecture just to keep the old demon entertained.

Kingston could have teleported directly outside, but he used the extra time it took to walk down the stairs to try to settle his nerves. He’d thought he had his shit together, but as he strolled outside, he almost broke down as soon as he saw the male he loved and respected most in the world. It seemed like forever since he’d last seen his beloved grandfather, and his heart ached from missing him.

“Do you need me, mate?”

The sound of Autumn’s voice in his head helped him regain control of his emotions, allowing him to mask himself with a calm he didn’t feel. “I’m good. Enjoy your shower and join us when you are done.”

Harrison Spencer stood several feet away, staring out at the River of Souls. Even in the middle of the night, he was wearing a dark suit that had been tailored to perfection. Although he was a few centuries old, Harrison still looked like a demon in his prime.

To keep up appearances as a man who’d been in business for several decades, he had a full head of salt and pepper hair and walked with the aid of a cane. The intricately carved cane was made of black wood with silver accents on the handle and tip. It might have looked like a showpiece, but Kingston knew its true purpose was to hide the lethal blade inside that his grandfather could wield with deadly precision.

At Kingston’s approach, Harrison turned to face him. The moment their eyes met, the years of separation seemed to melt away. While his grandfather basically looked the same, Kingston could see new lines of worry and strain around his eyes that hadn’t been there before. Knowing he was most likely the cause didn’t sit well with him, but he hoped he could ease some of that tension once he explained everything.

He just didn’t know where to begin.

“I knew you would come back here at some point,” Harrison stated in lieu of a proper greeting. “Didn’t think I knew about this place, did you, boy?”

“I always figured you did. It’s why I allowed you entry through the wards I set up.”

“I’ve been alive a whole lot longer than you,” Harrison reminded with a scoff. “You really think I can’t get past your protection wards?”

“I’m sure you could before,” Kingston said with a faint smile. “But things have changed quite a bit since the last time I saw you.”

He wasn’t sure why he had masked his true appearance before walking outside, but he let that façade slip away, revealing his glowing eyes and shimmering skin. In his god form, there would be no mistaking his power. He heard his grandfather’s sharp indrawn breath. It was a controlled reaction, but Kingston knew that was the equivalent to shocking the hell out of the older demon.

“Well…that’s something I didn’t expect. What happened to you?”

“I’m mated to the Goddess of Revenge,” Kingston stated, his voice filled with pride and a hint of a warning.

Harrison’s lips twitched as if he was holding back a smile. “After everything you’ve been through, that’s fitting, I suppose. So, being mated to a goddess has made you a god as well?”

“Basically,” Kingston admitted. “It happened after we bonded and shared our magic. But I don’t have her special powers of revenge.”

“I see. I was never able to find my true mate, but I’m glad you’ve met yours. A goddess is a great addition to the Spencer family, even if she is a celestial.”
