Page 26 of Tethered Magick

Syler threw a deadly look over his shoulder, warning me to go. To leave him.

My heart constricted. He couldn’t be serious.

Down each connection, I felt my men battling on my behalf. This night had turned into such shit, and I didn’t know what to do to stop any of it.

A lion emerged from the forest. A great big freaking lion. Its golden fur was muted in the moonlight. Branches rustled above me as a crow landed in a tree, its attention much too focused for that of a regular bird. A wolf crashed through the underbrush on the other side, stalking me one slow step at a time. The shadows surrounding me hid more glowing eyes that watched me predatorily.

This couldn’t be happening.

I was so fucked.

Purple magick glowed in my hands, and I threw another blast, hitting the ground near the lion’s feet, warning it back.

It didn’t so much as flinch, instead taking a step closer to me, its gaze locked on me like a hunter.

The other animals moved closer. I was outnumbered. How was I supposed to fight them all off at once without spilling a single drop of blood? Bleeding right now would only induce a frenzy, and I didn’t want to be a chew toy. I refused to be bitten against my will and saddled with men who were never meant to be mine.

Syler roared again, a clear communication to get the fuck out of there.

On a cry, I took off into the forest, willing my injured ankle to work properly.

My heart thundered like a raging storm, each footstep pounding with finality as I fled.

The forest thundered, leaves rustled, sticks cracked, and the earth yielded beneath sharp claws as the animals gave chase. My anxiety leveled up until I thought I’d explode from stress.

Lorn, run!Dason shouted into my head.We can’t hold them back.

I am running,I retorted, but I sounded out of breath to my own ears.

They’re breaking the ward around our territory,Axel snarled through the pack connection Dason had opened, his voice strained from fighting.

I veered left, changing course so abruptly one of the wolves slid into a tree.

One down, at least three to go.

But now I couldn’t go home like I’d originally planned. These woods were still unfamiliar, and I had no idea which direction I was heading.

I jumped over a fallen log like an Olympic athlete clearing a hurdle.

We’re sending reinforcements your way. Just hold on,Lorn, Chayton pleaded, the exertion of the fight coloring his tone.

The crow dove at me, trying to break my skin, but I ducked and batted it away, then sent out wild blasts of magick in an effort to deter it from bombing me again.

Where do I go?My breath released in airy pants. I hated running, especially in my human form, but I couldn’t shift fast enough. I’d gotten good at it, but my best time was ten seconds.

Ten seconds I couldn’t afford.

My boots dug into the ground as I pushed myself harder, faster.

Just keep running, baby!Jolon urged, panic working into his usually steady voice.

All I could see were glowing eyes in my periphery. They were catching up.

Oh, shit. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Chayton, Dason roared.Now.

I zigzagged, hoping to evade the lion that was practically nipping at my heels like an Australian Shepherd.
