Page 27 of Tethered Magick

A portal opened in front of me, and Chayton tumbled out as though he’d thrown himself from the other side. Behind him, a battle waged, and a wolf tumbled with him. I aimed at the beast, ready to take him out, until I recognized Nahele’s scent.

In a single leap, Chayton shredded his clothes into tiny pieces of confetti and dove over my head, shifting in midair. The impact of Chayton’s wolf barreling into the lion sounded lethal, and the two tore into each other.

Could a wolf even win against a lion?

Skidding to a stop, I felt magick burning in my fingertips, but I couldn’t get a clear shot of the enemy.

The crow dove at me once more, and this time I singed its tail feathers as it ascended to circle again. Its squawk of pain was oddly satisfying, but I didn’t revel in the small victory.

More crashing sounds bore down on us, and suddenly we were surrounded.

“Help him! Please!” I begged Nahele, who was apparently now my personal bodyguard.

He whined, and I knew I was asking him to do something against orders.

“Nahele, please,” I pleaded, dropping to my knees before him.

Nahele yipped at me to stay put, and he jumped into the fray.

I would have obeyed. Really, I would have, except another portal opened behind me.

I was on my feet in a second, whirling in time to see Tye and Mato step through.

At the last second, I reeled in my magick before I burned the crap out of my allies.

“I almost killed you,” I panted.

“Unlikely.” Tye smirked, holding up his hand. Smoky, black colored magick danced between his waggling fingers.

I gaped, wanting nothing more than to ask him about his powers, but now wasn’t the time.

“Are you alright?” Mato asked with concern in his voice, rushing to me and checking me for injuries.

He pulled me into his chest, and I didn’t fight the hug.

“I’m okay,” I reassured him as I pulled away, but was I?

My head was a muddled mess. I had no idea where I was. And my mates were being torn apart to keep me safe. Everywhere I turned, more shifted skinwalkers skulked from the forest, and I had nowhere safe to retreat to.

The hope that taking myself out of the equation would help extinguish the tensions and stop the fighting was a dying ember.

Tye cupped my neck, his thumb on my jaw, his fingers insistent. That green gaze was intense as he captured my full attention.

“Keep moving,” Tye ordered with undeniable authority.

Arguing was the furthest thing from my mind, and I hastily agreed.

I was already backing up as they joined the fight, Mato in a beautiful spotted leopard skin and Tye as a bright white wolf.

One yowled and the other snarled, each going off to either side to fight and protect.

Scrambling backwards, I didn’t pull my eyes from the action. Blood splattered everywhere, painting the forest in crimson. Pained cries became a sad melody carried by the breeze, and my mates’ anger was rife in their connections.

How dare these men attack us like this, and in our own territory no less? They’d been invited guests, and now they dared move against us just because they didn’t accept that no meant fucking no?

I growled as I spun around, ready to run, and then a profound awareness struck me straight through the chest. The powerful, potent scent surrounded me, and it took me to my knees.

My entire body warmed as tingling heat worked through my arms and legs to settle low in my abdomen. A gasp left my lips. My heart raced. And against my better judgment, my thighs clenched together.
