Holding up his hands, he leans forward, resting his elbows on his desk. “Look, I’m not saying you have to marry her, but you clearly still want her. In all the time I’ve known you, you’ve never lost sleep over a woman. Maybe you should talk to her and see what she has to say. You never know, she could want the same thing.”

I haven’t told him about the conversation at his housewarming party and clearly Alex hasn’t told Meghan either. For a brief moment, I wonder why that is. I always got the impression that Meghan and Alex tell each other everything.

I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have some perspective on what happened the other night.

“She came to Passionon Saturday.” I let my statement sit in the air.

Cooper’s gaze is on me, searching my face for... who knows what.

When it’s clear I’m not going to say anything further, he breaks the silence. “And?”

“She was with other people.”

“You’re going to have to give me more than one liners, Seb. I’m the lawyer here. I’m supposed to be the one who is evasive with the answers. We’ll be here all day if you keep being so cryptic. Have you seen any of them before?” he asks.

I turn to the window, unable to face him as I replay the CCTV in my mind. “The women and one of the guys, I haven’t. The other guy... he was from your housewarming. She was dancing with him.” Facing him again, I can see his mind whirling. “Who is he?”

It’s been eating me up, and the rage I felt when I saw them dancing inmyclub, did nothing to quell the feeling inside of me. And when she all but said she was going to take him home and fuck him, it was amplified.

“What did he look like?”

“Shaved head, beard, tattoos... his name’s Ben, I think.” I know it is. Her every word is ingrained in my mind—even the ones I’d rather forget.

Thanks for a good time, but I don’t want or need you in my life.

Cooper lets out a loud bark of laughter, bringing me back to the present. His eyes crease in the corners as a huge grin spreads across his mouth. “Are you serious?”

“I don’t think it’s funny, Coop. Look, I didn’t come here to talk to you about Alex. Let’s just get on with our meeting.”

“I’m laughing because Ben… is very much gay, but you’re right, back to business. So, you need us to manage the purchase of a property in Chicago?”

He’s gay. She was messing with me!

Fighting a smile, I reply to him, “Yes, if it’s something you can help with.”

I want to shout with joy from the rooftops, but I keep myself composed as if what he’s just told me hasn’t rejuvenated me and made this the best fucking day I’ve had in a while.

“What exactly is it you’re going to need?”

“The works. I need someone I can trust, that will lay it all out for me. I’m leaving for Chicago on Sunday to meet with George Bennet and then on Monday, I have a meeting with Wilkins and Wilkins,a Chicago law firm.”

“How long will you be out there for?”

“I imagine a few days. I have a return flight booked for Wednesday morning, but will stay as long as needed.”

“Okay. I can’t personally help you as I haven’t taken the bar in Chicago, but I’ve got the perfect person in mind who can be a liaison with the firm in Chicago.”

“I appreciate it. It’s probably better not to have you involved, anyway. I’d prefer to keep business and our friendship separate.”

A weird—almost mischievous—smile crosses his face as he picks up the phone from his desk. If I was a smarter, less distracted man, I’d demand he put it down and explain what the hell that look was. Instead, I turn to look back out at the view of Lower Manhattan.

“Can you come to my office, please?” Cooper asks whoever is on the other end of the line.
