Page 36 of Don't Fall in Love

I leave her standing in the room, not missing the look of disbelief that washes over her face. Buying this club is more important to me than protecting Alex’s feelings. She’s a big girl, she’ll get over it. And if she doesn’t, she can go back to avoiding me like the plague.

In my own room, I call George. He answers on the second ring, clearly expecting my call. “Sebastian, it’s good to hear from you so soon. I trust you have good news for me?”

I can hear the smile in his voice. It irks me that he always seems so happy; that he’s a man that ‘has it all’, whatever that means.

My tone is perhaps too gruff when I speak, but I don’t bother to bring it down a notch. “We’ll be there. Just send me the details and we can leave first thing in the morning.”

It’s as if he’s oblivious to my mood. “Oh Sebastian, that is perfect. I will let Miriam know. She’s been asking to meet you since I told her about your interest in Sanctuary. My middle child is visiting with his wife, so you can get to know at least one of my brood.” He laughs as if he’s just told the funniest joke. I don’t react.

We iron out a few of the details and confirm that Alex and I will take the two hour drive and should arrive by noon tomorrow.

Now all we need to do is iron out the plan of our backstory, because for the next week, we’re going to be under a lot of scrutiny.

Sitting on the end of my bed, I finish up emailing my contact at Wilkins and Wilkins to cancel our meeting tomorrow. I’m contemplating how long I can stay in my room and avoid the inevitable awkwardness with Alex when my phone buzzes in my hand.

Oh, shit, I forgot about Cooper.

To say he’s not pleased would be an understatement.

Cooper

What do you mean?

Hello?

What do you mean?

Sebastian?

You can’t send me a cryptic message like that and not tell me what you mean.

Answer me.

Great, now Meghan wants to know what you meant.

Sebastian William Worthington, I swear to God, if you don’t answer me there will be hell to pay.

From my wife.

The bubbles on the screen are still going, so I type out a quick reply.

Sebastian

Mate, you are so easy to mess with. The old boy wants me to go and stay with him and his family for a week.

I need Alex as a buffer. She’s agreed to go, if she can get the time off, which you have done. You and Meghan don’t need to worry about it.

Cooper

Fine, but you owe me when you get back. Dinner is on you.

Meghan is going to call Alex.

Not bothering to respond, I laugh at the angst evident in Cooper’s texts. He’ll get over it. He’s just so fucking pussy whipped by Meghan. She’s an amazing woman, but ever since she walked into his life, he’s been under her thumb even when they weren’t together.

I guess I should go and update Alex on the situation.

She’s sitting on the large gray sofa in the living room, her feet are tucked under her as she flicks through a magazine about things to do in Chicago.
