I can’t help the sharp intake of breath that comes at her words. “Jesus Christ, Alex. I went out with the guy I’m trying to convince I’mengagedto you.”

I look away from her, strangely hurt that she’d think so little of me. It’s then that I see the glass of water on my bedside table and two painkillers. Snatching them up, I pop the pills and gulp the water down.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know why I thought you would.” More nervous twiddling ensues and I cover her hand with mine, causing her to lift her focus to me. “My mind’s been a bit confused since yesterday morning. What with your proposal and all. I just don’t understand what’s changed.”

That makes two of us.

“Look, I won’t make any promises to you other than I won’t fall in love with you, Alex. If you don’t want either of us to see anyone else, then we won’t see anyone else. The minute that becomes a thought for me, I will tell you and we will call this off. I enjoy your company as much as I enjoy being inside of you.”

“I’d want us to be exclusive.” It’s barely audible, but I hear it nonetheless, and if I wasn’t so hungover, I’d fist pump the air, then fuck her senseless.

“Okay, but if we’re doing this, you’ve got to quit flirting with dickhead Jensen.”

A laugh erupts from her mouth before she throws a hand over it. “Dickhead Jensen? Really, Sebastian? What are you in sixth grade?”

Sheepishly, I shrug my shoulders, grabbing onto her hand and pulling her into my side. She settles into it as if she fits perfectly. I kiss the top of her head, closing my eyes as I inhale the sweet scent of her shampoo. The combination of her in my arms and a smell that is becoming so familiar eases some of the tension and pounding behind my eyes.

She goes to move away, but I tighten my grip around her and eventually she relents, resting her hand on my stomach. She shifts slightly to kick off her sneakers before swinging a leg over my thigh.

“This is reminding me of yesterday morning,” I mumble, my voice thick with sleep.

“Don’t fuck it up, Sebastian,” she whispers.

I barely hear her as I slip into sleep, and yet her words are replaying in my mind even as I drift deeper.

I’m really hoping I don’t fuck it up either, Alex.

* * *

It’s late when I wake up. Even before I open my eyes, I know Alex isn’t lying next to me. On my back with my eyes still closed, I think over everything that’s happened in the last few days. From dragging Alex into my harebrained scheme, her going along with it, and then us agreeing to sleep with each other exclusively.

I can’t help the grin that spreads over my face. I bet I look like a damn fool. This woman.

She’s something special.

The unfiltered thought has the smile dropping from my face before I can stop it. I don’t know where that came from, but what I do know is I can’t be thinking shit like that about Alex.

About anyone.

I can’t start confusing fucking and a fake fiancée as anything more.

Throwing the covers off, I climb from the bed and walk to the closet. A quick look at the analog clock on Alex’s bedside table tells me it’s nearly dinnertime. I haven’t slept this long since I was in college.Maybe I should lay off the alcohol. A quick shower, some fresh clothes, and I’m certain the remnants of my hangover will be gone.

When my head is covered by the fabric of my t-shirt as I get dressed, I feel a hand skate down my chest and over my stomach. Based on the zap of electricity that heats my blood, I know exactly who it is.

“I came to get you for dinner. Do you think we have time?”

I pull my head through the hole of my t-shirt, coming face to face with Alex’s heated gaze. Her plump bottom lip is between her straight white teeth, and her focus is on the hand that is playing with the buckle of my belt.

“As much as it pains me to say this, I don’t think we do.” I cup her cheek, tipping her face up to mine. “For everything I’d want to do to you, I’d need more time.”

She blinks slowly up at me, her eyes dropping to my mouth. Unable to resist, I bend to capture her mouth with my own.

Just one kiss, I promise myself.

Alex takes a step closer to me, her hands resting on my waist as I hold her face between my palms. Her lips part with my own, and I sweep my tongue into her mouth, luxuriating in the taste. It’s a mix of red wine and a salty yet sweet taste.

She moans, and as I drop my hands to her waist, her arms lift to wrap around my shoulders. Her chest presses closer to my own, and I tighten my grip on her waist.
