Like an addict, I take her index finger and pop it in my mouth, trying to get my fix. The taste I get is faint and I’m certain she tried to wash away the evidence.

Alex shifts in my lap, rubbing on my hardening cock. I pull her finger from my mouth, resting my head on her shoulder as I try to get my shit together.

George chooses that moment to burst our bubble. His question is like a bucket of ice cold water bringing us back to reality.

“So, have you two set a date yet?”

“So, have you two set a date yet?”

I pull away from Sebastian, the sexual fog lifting as George’s question registers. My eyes go back to Sebastian, silently begging him to answer. One side of his mouth tips up as he pushes a loose strand of my hair behind my ear. He looks like he’s enjoying this, which is crazy.

“Not yet, but we’ll be tying the knotverysoon,” Sebastian replies, as calm as ever.

My eyes widen a fraction of a second before I drop my chin and fiddle with the hem of my sweater, hiding the emotions I’m sure are all over my face. Why does that feel so much more real than it is?

It’s all pretend. It’s all pretend.

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” Miriam says as she joins us all at the table.

“Isn’t it just? Maybe we can sign the deeds over as a wedding gift,” George replies as he pulls Miriam into his side.

I feel Sebastian’s grip tighten on my thigh at George’s statement. Confident that the shutters are down, I turn to face Sebastian and cup his cheek as I say with a wide smile, “Wouldn’t that be amazing, Bastian?”

His grip loosens as his mouth curves up into a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes but still has his dimple peeking at me, “Yes it would, baby.”

Sebastian is quiet for the remainder of the evening, barely interacting with conversation and even then it’s only when he’s asked direct questions that he responds.

After dessert, I excuse us, claiming to have a headache. With heavy footsteps, Sebastian follows behind me as I move into the bedroom. When the door is closed, I turn to face him from my position in the middle of the room.

“Are you okay?” he asks, moving toward me.

I frown before shaking my head, a small laugh escaping my lips. “Oh, I’m fine. You just didn’t seem too… with it.”

“I think we should do it.”

Sebastian walks to the bed, sitting on the end of it, his hands clasped between his legs. Desperation is practically seeping out of his pores.

“I’m not following. What exactly should we do?”

He lifts his gaze to me, and for a moment I’m distracted by how incredibly handsome he is, that is until he says, “Get married.”

I laugh. Hard. A snort erupts from me at the hilarity of his suggestion, and as I’m trying not to double over with laughter, my focus rests on him.

He’s not laughing, and that image sobers me up, fast.

“You’re joking, right?” I ask, wiping at the tears that have formed in my eyes.

“No, Alex, I’m not joking. I think we should do it.”

“What, so you can get a fucking building? You can’t be serious, Sebastian,” I whisper-shout, my anger rising.

“I am serious. It's not a big deal. As soon as the papers are signed for the club, we can get an annulment.”

There’s a pounding in my ears as I try to reign in my temper. Is he really that arrogant? I band my arms around my waist as my body trembles. An innate need to protect myself from his blasé attitude and the hurt it's pouring down on me propels my body forward. I march into the bathroom and close the door behind me. My fingers grip onto the edge of the ceramic sink as I pull in deep, reassuring breaths.
