Sebastian

Alex isn’t in bed when I wake. Her side of the bed is cold, and when I walk into the bathroom, the faint smell of her perfume still lingers in the air. A sense of disappointment that I can’t have her before we face the day settles in my stomach.

An overwhelming urge to see her has me getting ready quicker than I would normally, but as I wash my body, I force myself to slow down. This is only supposed to be two people scratching an itch for each other.

Dressed in a pair of black jeans, a white t-shirt, and a pair of boots, I head to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. I come up short when I walk into the room and find it empty. Since we arrived, the kitchen has been a hub of activity every morning.

A pot of coffee is sitting in the coffeemaker on the counter and a clean cup sits on the draining board. I swipe it up and make myself a cup of the still hot nectar.

I lean against the island counter looking out the window into the backyard, my ankles crossed and my cup pressed to my lips when George comes through the back door.

“Good morning, Sebastian. Did you sleep well?”

“Morning, George. I did, thanks. You?”

“Always.” He moves to the coffee pot and refills his mug.

“Where is everyone this morning?”

“Miriam and I are on the side porch.” He pauses, turning to face me as he assesses me, “Daniel and Sophie popped into town, and Alex and Jensen are in the stables.”

“Oh.” I try to keep my features neutral.

Internally, I’m picturing all the ways I can punish Alex tonight because I can guarantee she’s flirting up a storm with dickhead Jensen.

“Come, they should be heading out soon.” George moves past me, but not before I catch the look of skepticism on his face.

Something tells me today isn’t going to be the easy day I had planned. I move to refill my cup, then follow George out to the side porch. Miriam sits in a rocking chair, a colorful knitted blanket thrown over her legs. When George hands her the mug, he must say something to her because she peeks her head around him and gives me a warm smile.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.”

I throw her a smirk that I know brings out my dimple. “Morning, Miriam.”

She motions to a chair next to her and says, “Come sit, dear”

“I’m goo—”

My words are cut off as my gaze flies to the door of a large wooden stable as it opens. Alex comes out, her hair braided down her back, a tight fitting navy tweed jacket hugging her curves, and trousers like a second skin on her legs. Riding boots encase her feet, and under her right arm sits a black riding hat.

Even from here I can see the light glint off of the diamond sitting on her finger. My diamond. I can’t help the smirk that sneaks across my lips.

Her left hand leads out a silky brown mare with a shiny long black mane. Both two creatures of beauty, but Alex is the one that holds my attention. I’m barely aware of Jensen as he follows her out; that is until he helps Alex settle onto the back of the horse. I watch his hands intently as he helps her up, looking for any excuse to lay him out.

She’s mine.

It’s my ring on her finger.

I’m the only one that gets to touch her and… taste her.

My grip tightens on my coffee mug. In an effort to not break it, I put it on the side table next to Miriam, my eyes still on Alex.

“She’s on one of our tamest mares. Her name’s Coco,” Miriam tells me, her soft gaze finds mine as I look down at her before I turn back to the railing.

She’s mistaken whatever she’s seen in me as for concern over Alex hurting herself. She should be concerned about me hurting her son if he touches what’s mine in the wrong way.

Alex moves the horse with ease, walking in circles as Jensen gets himself settled on his own. She moves to a trot, following behind Jensen as he takes a trail along the back of the property. As they move further along, Alex kicks the horse into a canter to match Jensen.

What happens next moves both in slow motion and at super speed. My stomach plummets at the same time as the carefree smile that was on her face turns to one of fear.
