The horse rears up, and she slips in her seat.

Hold on, Alex.

When the horse rears up again, Alex slips further in her seat, unable to have righted herself from the first movement.

Her scream of terror will stay with me for eternity. It echoes around the field, across the lake and back up to the house.

I can only watch as she’s thrown in the air and off of the horse. I don’t even think about it; my feet are in motion, my gaze is locked on her even as I vault over the porch railing, running as fast as I can.

I’m coming, baby.

The moment she hits the ground, a guttural roar releases from me and I push myself harder. Further forward, across the space between us.

But it’s still not enough.

“Alex,” I scream.

My lungs burn and my voice is hoarse as I shout for her, praying she can at least still hear me.

She’s not fucking moving. Why isn’t shefuckingmoving?

Come on, baby, just get up.

Please, Princess.

“Call a fucking ambulance,” I shout over my shoulder to the porch behind me. It’s then I see George following behind me, his pace much slower, and Miriam nowhere to be seen.

“Miriam is calling them,” George calls back, the worry clear in his voice.

It feels like a lifetime by the time I reach her. Falling to my knees next to her, I pick up her hand in mine, cradling her soft skin in my palm. Jensen is kneeling on her other side, his hands are on her wrist, searching for her heartbeat. I want to rip him off of her and ask him why the fuck he thought this was a good idea.

Deep breath in… one… two… three… and blow it out.

Her helmet has come off and is laying on the ground a foot away. I breathe as I look down on her, willing the beast inside of me to calm down. It’ll do her no good if I burn this world to the ground like I want to.

She might not make it.

A small cut marks the smooth skin of her forehead, but aside from that, she physically looks okay. Her skin looks pale, and as I hold her hand in mine, I notice how cold it is. I bring her palm to my chest, desperate to have her close but knowing it’s best not to move her.

Bending to her ear, my voice is thick as I murmur, “Princess, I need you to wake up. I can’t lose you. Not when I’ve just found you.”

I’m lost.

I don’t know how to make this better.

My misty gaze finds Jensen’s. I don’t need to voice my question; it’s clear in my eyes.

“She’s got a heartbeat, and it’s strong. I think she’s just been knocked out by the fall.” He doesn’t say anything for a moment before continuing, “I’m so sorry, Sebastian.”

“It won’t fix what’s happened. I just hope for your sake she pulls through.”

I turn back to Alex, dismissing him. In the distance, I can hear the sound of the ambulance and am aware of the horses standing not too far from us.

“Sebastian?” George calls my name and pulls me from my focus on Alex. It’s then that I notice Jensen and the horses have gone.

“Yes?”

“The EMTs are here.”
