Page 39 of Don't Make Promises

Jamison and I alternate between dancing, drinking and talking for a few hours until the guilt gets the best of me. As much as I try and act like I can just forget my manners, they’re so deeply ingrained that I haven’t been paying attention to Jamison for the last thirty minutes—which is also rude.

I leave him at the bar with the promise that I’ll return and if I’m not back in an hour, he can hunt me down. I’m a sweaty mess from all the dancing, and at least one drink over from my limit, but I find the table easily enough. When I arrive, it’s just Sutton and Noah occupying it.

There’s a heavy tension filling the air and if I had better use of my faculties, I might notice how they aren’t sitting that close, or even talking to each other.

Confusion must show on my face as I approach because Sutton gives me a welcoming smile before she says, “Alex and Ben are over there dancing.” She points just over my right shoulder and my gaze follows.

“Oh well, I just wanted to come say hi.”

Sutton gives me a soft, sad, smile. “Hi. I love your dress.”

I look down and smooth my hands over my hips. “Thank you, I love yours too.”

Sutton leans back, showing me more of her black sequined mini dress. It’s short and sparkly with spaghetti straps giving it a delicate look. “Thank you. Have you been having fun?”

“The best time.”

It’s awkward.

Like super awkward and I want to leave.

Noah is staring at me with a look of, what I can only decipher as, brotherly disappointment. While Sutton looks like she’s seconds away from dragging me to sit next to her and act as a buffer.

Taking a step back, I bump into a solid body behind me as a set of powerful masculine hands land on my waist. “Oh, I’m sorry,” I shout over the music, turning to see who I’ve stepped into. An easy smile fills my face as I smile up at Jamison.

He leans down, his hands wrapping around my waist as he says, “I got tired of waiting.”

He’s eager, I’ll give him that.

With a chuckle, I turn to Noah and Sutton, “This is Jamison Monroe. We’re going back to dancing.”

I don’t wait for them to reply, instead, with a distracted wave, I turn with Jamison leading me back to the dance floor. We only stop to get refreshments the whole time and when we leave Siren, he comes with us to Passion, a club I’ve wanted to go to for a while.

It’s impossible to miss the gap that seems to have formed between Noah and Sutton as the night wore on. Or the way that Noah can’t seem to control the ticking muscle in his jaw as I laugh and chat with Jamison.

I’ve had an amazing night with Jamison, but he still hasn’t tried to kiss me. It’s on the tip of my tongue to ask him why, when I feel a familiar presence standing behind me. Ignoring Noah, I continue grinding into Jamison. I’m practically straddling his leg, his hand low on my back as my hips roll to the tempo of the music.

“Looks like my time is up, cupcake.”

A frown forms on my brow as I look up at Jamison, his words momentarily confusing me. I thought we were having fun. At my unspoken question, he juts his chin indicating behind me. When I glance over my shoulder, I come face to face with a rather pissed off looking Noah.

No, that’s got to just be the lighting. It is dark in here.

I shout over the music, my voice thick with lust. “It’s okay, Noah. I can find my own way home. Y’all can leave without me.”

He doesn’t move.Did he not hear me?I mean, it is loud. Stepping away from Jamison, I rest a hand on Noah’s shoulder and stand on my tip toes.

I didn’t think this through.

His spicy scent assails my nostrils and my hand tingles as I touch him. Even with the fabric of his white t-shirt acting as a barrier there still seems to be a current passing between us. I want to step away but I can’t seem to move.

Noah rests his hand on my hip as he dips his head to hear me, seemingly unfazed by our close proximity and the effect he has on me.

An elbow in the back from some random dancer has me falling into him. With my chest now pressed to his, my whole body feels on fire. My breath hitches as I struggle to breath.
