What is going on?

I can only blame this on too many drinks, too much of a height difference and too many people crowding around. There is nothing between us. It’s all in my drunken imagination.

Some of my bravado is gone when I say, “Y’all can leave, I’m stayin’ out.”

His fingers flex on my hips as he inhales through his nose. I wait for him to tell me how he’s got to keep me safe and blah, blah, blah.

Taking a step back, I give him a smile that I hope conveys how much I need this, and that I can look after myself. And none of the confusion I feel at my body’s reaction to him.

Why can’t it be like that with anyone else but him?

Sutton appears at Noah’s side. A blush spreads over her cheeks as she gushes, “Hey, Savannah. I feel like I haven’t seen you all night.” Her eyes flit behind me to where I’m sure Jamison is still waiting. “We’re heading home. You coming?”

I swallow thickly, as if I’ve just been caught doing something I shouldn’t. I guess I have, because I shouldn’t be touching Noah at all.

Jamison wraps an arm around my shoulder, whispering in my ear, “This is quite a situation you’re in, cupcake.” He straightens as he holds his hand out to Noah, “We didn’t get to meet properly earlier, Jamison Monroe.”

Right, ‘cause Noah was too busy sulking about whatever.

Noah doesn’t take Jamison’s hand. A weird tension rolls off of him. Sutton and I watch as Noah and Jamison seem to be having some unspoken conversation.

“Okay, well this is gettin’ weird. I’m gonna get a drink. I’ll see y’all at home and you…” I stroke a hand down Jamison’s arm before continuing, “At the bar.”

When I step between them to head in the direction of the bar, Noah goes to grab a hold of me, stopping inches away. I can feel the heat of his palm on my skin and even though there is no physical contact, he might as well be dragging me under water. My breath stalls in my throat as I look up at him with wide eyes.

I don’t know how long we stand like that, but it’s as if everything but that near touch is muted. The lights dim and the music is only a dull hum somewhere in my subconscious.

He drops his hand, taking a half step away for good measure. “We’re all going home. You’ve had enough for tonight.”

I twist my face as I look up at him, because surely I just heard him wrong. “Look, big brother, you don’t get ta tell me when I’ve had enough. You don’t have no say ov—”

My words are cut off as Noah swoops down and throws me over his shoulder.

This guy has gotta be off his rocker.

His strong arm bands over the back of my bare legs and I’m very aware of the fact that my ass is probably on display for the whole club to see as he marches out. If it wasn’t for the fact that heat is pooling in the pit of my stomach at the feel of his bare skin on mine, I’d be hitting and kicking at him.

As it is, I’m paralyzed; my whole body focused on the fact that he’stouchingme.

Maybe later, when I’m alone in my room, I will berate myself for feeling like this.Maybe.

Sutton trails behind, shouting over the music. “Noah, what the hell are you doing?”

Good question.

Even when we get outside, he doesn’t put me down. Instead he strides over to the town car, bundling me into the back seat and slamming the door shut. I’m surprised the glass doesn’t shatter.

Blinking as I stare down at my lap, my mind works a mile a minute as I try and fail to process what the hell just happened. How does he think what he just did was appropriate?

Your thoughts and feelings weren’t exactly appropriate.

That’s not the point.

He shouldn't have done that. If he didn’t, then I wouldn’t have had those inappropriate thoughts. Or felt like I was about to combust just because his hand was holding my thigh.

Noah and Sutton arguing on the sidewalk pulls me out of my whirling thoughts. I have no intention of being in the middle of that. Being in the middle of a couple mid fight is a total buzz kill and I’m here to party.

An idea forms. I’m going back inside. Even if it’s to only get Jamison’s number. And maybe a kiss.
