I nodded, unsure of how to respond. “I—okay,” I said.

My phone chimed loudly, and I felt it vibrate in my pocket.

“I need a favor from you in return,” I said.

Maverick nodded. “Anything you need.”

I put my palm against his chest to gather myself to speak. “I need you to pretend to be gay.”

Maverick’s mouth parted and he scoffed. “What?”

Jordan chuckled from behind him by his doorway where I hadn’t noticed he stood. “I love this, keep going.”

“I need you to pretend, too. Is Frankie here?” I asked.

Maverick swiped his palm down his face. “What are we aiming for, a threesome?”

Jordan’s attitude changed. “I don’t want to participate in your girlish fantasies, Josie. If you need me to pretend to bone you—sure, but none of this gay talk. It’s out of my comfort zone.”

“This is serious!” I shouted.

Maverick eyed me. “Why?”

“My parents are in town, and they don’t know I live with two guys. They’ll force me to move out if you don’t pretend to be gay. Please.”

Jordan studied my face closely. “Okay, only if I’m the butch one.”

Maverick turned around and shot him daggers. “I’m not the receiver, you jackass. If I’m anything, I’m giving it to you.”

Jordan sighed. “I’ll do it if you cook more spaghetti. I got hungry last night and ate it all.”

Chapter Twelve

Maverick

This isn’t going to work.

Josie texted her parents and started pacing the room, picking up random cleats, and the aluminum cans from the table and pulling down her dress.

Jordan gave me a worried look. “Are we meeting the president, Josie? I mean—your parents can’t be that bad.”

She stopped, hands on her hips, and frowned. “It’s not my dad, it’s my mom, and she’s strict and never believes you.”

“You want to sit on my lap, bro?” Jordan asked from the couch.

I slapped the back of his head. “Cut that crap. I’m not sitting on your lap, maybe you should just go into your room and pretend you’re not here—,”

“No!” Josie shouted. “She’ll want to see his room. Just be quiet and go along with what I say, please. I have nowhere else to go, and if they catch on, they’ll force me to move back home to Zachary.”

I’d never met Josie’s parents, because I never had a reason, but it shocked me to think her parents were so strict. Josie walked over to Jordan, took off his cap, and ruffled his hair.

Jordan smirked. “Is this how gay guys wear their hair, Josie?”

She shot him daggers. She squealed when she walked into Jordan’s room, and I followed her inside while she tore down a half-naked picture of Kylie Jenner and shoved her underneath his bed. “This isn’t going to work,” she whispered.

“Calm down, it’ll work.”

Josie shrugged. “I—I hope so.”
