He inhaled my scent and licked a line up my neck to my jaw. “Hmm, who is it?” He nipped my jawline and then my bottom lip. His mouth moved against mine like satin, but I realized he was waiting for an answer.

“It’s King.”

Maverick’s jaw tightened, and his fingers trailed against my thigh to my waist. “What does he want?”

Maverick sucked against my neck, making my eyes close and my fingers clutch around the counter beneath me. “To go out.”

He pulled me closer to him by my hips and whispered against my neck. “I assume you’re going to tell him?”

I nodded heavily and swallowed. “I am.”

Maverick pulled back to look at me with heavy-lidded eyes. “I made an appointment with the school’s counselor today.”

“Really?”

“I did,” he said.

“Good. I’m going to tell King in class that I’m seeing someone else.”

The corner of Maverick’s mouth twitched. “Good.”

Knock. Knock.

Maverick sighed. “We have no privacy here.”

Jordan opened the door and stopped in the doorway. “Y’all need to start putting a sock on the door handle.”

Maverick slammed the door in his face. “Wait your turn.”

“I have to get ready,” I said.

“Okay,” he said but didn’t move. “You want to—I don’t know—go out somewhere this weekend? We have a game tonight, but maybe tomorrow or something?”

I looked stunned.

He scoffed. “Don’t look so surprised. We could pack a picnic and go to the park, or go see one of those plays at the art center.”

A bubble of laughter spilled from my throat, I didn’t mean for it to happen, but it did. Maverick’s mossy eyes narrowed and he pressed his mouth into a thin line. “You’re laughing at me?”

“I’m sorry,” I said pressing my palm against his chest. “I just didn’t expect that from you.”

He stood up, and swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbed deep in his throat. “Well, maybe I’ll continue to surprise you, Josie Lee.”

I hopped down and slid past him. “You’ve been surprising me since I moved into this apartment, Maverick.”

My nerves slid down my spine as King entered our math class and walked over toward me. I hid partially behind my large coffee and bagel. His light eyes moved toward mine, and I could see he knew something was wrong.

He sat down beside me and tapped his knuckles against my desk. His cologne smelled nice, and his smile brightened up his handsome face.

Gah, I hate myself.

“So,” he said. “Did you see my text? There is a new movie out that I want to see.”

I sipped my coffee quietly before clearing my throat. Leaning forward, I moved closer to him and gathered my nerve to make eye contact. “Uh-oh,” he said, leaning back. He took off his cap and ran his fingers through his sandy hair.

“Listen, King—,”
