Carefully, I texted her back and walked the rest of the way. My blood pumped wildly in my veins at the thought of seeing her in person. I shoved my fingers through my hair as I opened our apartment door.

Frankie looked up from the couch where he had all his schoolbooks scattered. He looked frantic. “Where is Josie?” he asked.

I shut the door behind me, tugged off my t-shirt, and wiped the sweat from my forehead with it. “On her way home, why?”

“I need help with my math—,”

“Let me stop you there, bro. Josie and I have plans tonight.”

Frankie scoffed. “I don’t understand this. I need her help.”

Really?I snatched his book from him and glanced over the section he needed help with. Math, I was good at, so I scooted him down and started breaking it down for him. Nobody was going to take away from my time with Josie tonight.

Thirty minutes later I asked, “Does that make sense?”

“I think so. Who knew you were good at math?” he asked.

I stood up. “You never asked. Now go to my room and shut the door.”

Frankie sat back on the couch, giving me a small smile. “Why?”

I clutched the fabric of my t-shirt in my fist. “Because Josie will be home any minute and I have plans with her.”

Frankie kicked off his new shoes and placed his feet on the couch. “What kind of plans, huh?”

Jordan burst through the door a few moments later with Waverly and my anger soared high. You’ve got to be kidding me.“Where is Josie?” Jordan asked. “I’m starving.”

“She isn’t your chef,” I said, walking toward the shower. “Cook something yourself.”

“What’s up your butthole—,” Jordan started but Waverly stopped him.

“Don’t babe, he’s probably upset about his counseling session.”

I stopped in the doorjamb to the hallway, my spine stiffened at the sound of her voice. “What the hell did you just say?”

Waverly stood beside Jordan, who looked shocked, her bottom lip in between her teeth as she shrugged. She swayed on her feet, crossing her arms and shoving her cleavage toward her chin. “I mean, I heard you scream from the receptionist's desk. I just figured whatever you have going on, it’s probably putting you in a bad mood.” She smirked. “Don’t be ashamed, a lot of people go to counseling.”

Frankie glanced up, weighing my mood as I ground my teeth together. “You know, Waverly, the only thing putting me in any kind of mood is you. You’d do good not to talk to me.”

Waverly looked worried. “What did I do?”

Jordan eyed me, noticing the anger that I tried to maintain. “Waverly, let’s go get something to eat—,”

“You’re going to let him talk to me like that?” she asked. “It’s your apartment, too.Itwas your apartment first. I have every right to be here.”

Jordan opened his mouth to respond but Josie walked through the front door. She halted in the doorway, judging the situation as she hid her pink Victoria’s Secret bag behind her back.

Waverly glanced at her and chuckled. “Shopping like a big girl today, Josie?”

Josie’s cheeks turned pink. Shirtless, I shoved past Jordan and Waverly, stopping in front of an embarrassed Josie. “Let’s go,” I whispered, tracing the frown on her lips.

She didn’t ask where we were going, just turned and started down the walkway. I glanced at Frankie. “Go to bed at a good time, I’ll make sure you’re up for school in the morning.”

“Got it,” he mumbled. I was sure hearing his older brother had meltdowns in the counselor’s office worried him. With Big Mouth Gabby around, it didn’t look like we could hide anything.

I found Josie leaning against the passenger side of my truck, her bags hanging in front of her while she glanced down at her flip-flops. “I’m sorry,” I said, lifting her chin. “She showed up. I wanted to spend some time alone.”

Josie smiled, though it didn’t meet her eyes. “It’s fine. Where are we going?”
