“Why?” Josie asked.

The cop’s beady eyes slanted as he looked at her for the first time. “You may not know it, but your little boyfriend’s mother has been prostituting around Zachary since her younger son disappeared.”

Oh my God.“Disappeared?” I said. “He’s living with me. I have the guardianship papers.”

“I’ll need a copy of those, son, now empty your pockets.”

My pride slithered down into the dirt to die as I pulled my wallet and keys from my pockets. He took his time looking through it, giving us a search, and then my truck. The disappointment was evident on his face when he came back with nothing.

I wanted to cause a scene and tell him how stupid he was, but I couldn't risk any trouble or losing my scholarship for reckless behavior.

“You two need to get off private property and don’t come back. I’ll be checking. And I expect a copy of the signed guardianship papers faxed over to the police department tomorrow morning, if not, I’ll have to bring Frankie back home.”

He waited for us to get into our truck and back out before ringing his siren once more and following us off the dirt road. Josie cleared her throat. “How did he even find us out here?” she asked into the silence.

I clutched the steering wheel, feeling livid, feeling like a piece of the slum where I grew up. “I don’t know, someone must have called and told on us.”

Josie’s dark eyes met mine. “But no one knew we were here?”

“Someone did, and I’m going to find out who.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

Josie

In all my years of living, I never imagined myself being caught doing anything by the police. Especially not in the bed of a truck with Maverick Booker. If Waverly hadn’t crushed the mood before, the police officer surely did.AndI mean crushed by a garbage truck and tossed into a landfill to die.

Maverick was quiet on the drive back to the apartment. The distant look on his face grew the closer we got. It had to be King or Waverly that called, but how would they have known where we were if they hadn’t followed us?

I glanced behind us on the road, seeing no one. Maybe it was a fluke. Zachary kids spent a lot of time in that field in high school, not that I ever went, but I knew they did. Maverick parked his truck, and sat still, looking out at the woods across from our apartment building.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Turning to face him, I cocked my head. “Why are you sorry?”

He sighed, scrubbing his face with the palm of his hand. “That was humiliating. My mother caused most of my problems growing up. Her lack of care, or her selfish actions. I hate that you were caught in the middle of it.”

I leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Maverick. You’re nothing like your mother, and I don’t blame you for that. Okay?”

He pinched the tip of my chin and gestured for us to get out. The hot summer air clung to my skin as we ascended the stairs. When we got back, Jordan sat alone on the couch with his hat in his hands. He jumped up quickly, meeting our gaze with a worried look.

I’d never seen Jordan serious. “Hey.”

“What’s up?” Maverick asked.

Jordan cleared his throat. “I kicked Waverly out. She won’t be back. I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you, I should have, and now I see she was out to get you.”

Maverick nodded.

“Yeah,” I said. “She’s the worst.”

Jordan smirked. “Did you get to try on what you were hiding in those bags—,”

“And the sentiment is over,” Maverick said with an eye roll. “You don’t worry about her trying anything on.”

Jordan shrugged. “Just—,”

“Saying?” I finished for him.
