Read the email, Sinead. You’re going down.

What the fuck? Who still talks like that? Reading it makes it sound juvenile, but I’ll heed the warning. I open the email and check the sender address. I don’t know the domain, and it’s just a series of letters and numbers before the at symbol.

Keep digging and find out what happens. You should have quit when you discovered we bugged your place. You should have quit when we bugged your hotel room.

We? Who the fuck is we?

This is your last chance. Otherwise, everyone drowns. Tyler’s already getting fired. Judge Hutchens isn’t so squeaky clean. And you. There’s more to you than killing your sister.

What the fuck does that mean? I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket after what happened the first time I drove. I’ve never been busted for drugs or underage drinking. The only thing I can think of is this fucker knows about Gabriele and me. If that’s the case, I need to know who this is, and I need to get the judge to decide before this person leaks anything. I remember what Gabriele told me a couple nights ago. I dial my phone.

“Lorenzo? It’s Sinead. I need you to come get me when you can. I need you to come up to my office and look at an email.”

“Are you okay? Is it a threat?”

I hear urgency in his voice as he demands answers.

“I’m fine, but I’m concerned.”

It sounds like he muffles the phone, then I hear the elevator ping.

“I’m on my way. Don’t open anything else on your computer. Do you have an Apple or Android phone?”

“Apple.”

“Don’t call or text or do anything on it until I get there.”

“Okay.”

Now I’m getting freaked out. Now I want to talk to Gabriele.

“Sinead?”

“Yeah.”

“Call Gabriele if it’ll make you feel better. But touch nothing until I get there. Use your office phone.”

“Thanks.”

We hang up and immediately I’m looking up Gabriele’s number. I don’t have a choice. I need to memorize his number. It keeps ringing, but he doesn’t answer. Oh, God. Is he at that place? I’m trying not to panic. I call again, and it rings and rings. For fuck’s sake, Gabriele. Please. I try a third time.

“Who is this?”

“Gabe.”

“Sinead, what’s wrong? What happened?”

“I got a text and an email. Lorenzo’s coming, but he told me not to touch anything. It sounded like he doesn’t like that I have an Apple phone. I don’t understand, and I’m scared.”

“I’m coming. Do as Lorenzo says. He’ll get to you faster than I can, but I’m on my way.”

I hear him talking to someone, saying that I need him. I do, but what are they going to think about me? We were just together. What if this turns out to be nothing? I’m going to come across as so needy. I want their approval because Gabriele’s entire world revolves around them. If they don’t like me…

I sit, trying not to fidget for what seems like hours. I’m trying to think about other cases and other things I could be doing. But I haven’t dusted off a law book in years. Everything is online. Any precedent I need, any law I need, I can find all of it online. But I can’t use my fucking computer.

“Sinead?”

I jerk my head up when I hear Ashley’s voice. I was lost deeper in thought than I realized.
