“Should I expect not to hear from you?”

“Yes.”

“Could it be a few days?”

“Yes.”

“Will your friends have to go too? Or will someone be able to stay with me? Or do I stay with Massimo and Nicoletta?”

“Carmine and Matteo will be with me. Lorenzo, Luca, and Marco will take shifts guarding you. I want you to go about your day just like normal, even if I’m gone for a while. Just don’t go anywhere without one of them.”

“How scared should I be, Gabe? Don’t tell me not to be because I’m with your family.”

“I don’t want you out of their sight, but you can still go to the office, the courthouses, client meetings. Whatever. But I don’t want you going to the police, and I don’t want you talking to any of them.”

“What if the judge calls me in?”

“Then you go, and one guy stands outside the door.”

“This person said they bugged my place. Are they the ones responsible for the car bombing?”

“No.”

His answer is immediate, and that makes me blink away tears. Who else is after me? He draws me away from the desk and positions us, so he’s shielding me from anything Lorenzo could see. But I’m certain his friend can tell he’s kissing me. I melt into it, and for a moment I forget why I asked him to come.

“Piccolina, I’ll be back as fast as I can. But this ends now. You’ll be safe.”

“Will you be safe, Daddy?”

I barely make enough sound to count as a whisper. I more mouth my question than say it.

“Yes. I’m going to take care of this. No one is going to threaten you again.”

“You sound so sure.”

“I am. I love you, Sinead. There’s nothing I won’t do to protect you.”

“I love you, Gabe. I trust you completely.”

And I do. Our kiss is way too short, but we hear Lorenzo moving around. We look toward him, and he’s packing up both laptops. He drops my phone in the bag, too. When he looks at Gabriele, he grins.

“You know what Car’s going to say about this.”

“Fanculo.”

“What does that mean?”

He keeps looking at Lorenzo when he speaks.

“Fuck off. Gloat all you want, but you’ve gotten the same lecture as I have more than once.”

“Gabe?”

“Carmine insists we’re all asking for trouble using Apple products instead of Android. He and Maria are the only ones who do. He insists ours are easier to hack, and this proves his point. But we also have other resources available at our homes and in our cars to make sure no one’s hacking them or wiretapping them.”

“I’m getting a new phone. I want Carmine to tell me what to get.”

I’m dead serious.
