I hear the snideness.Stronzo. Asshole.

“Well, I do. Does this have to do with the Ivankov branch or not?”

“If it fucks them over, then that’s just a plus. He’s pissed at your woman.”

Chellie mentioned her work connecting her to the Triad. Does she know more? No. She wouldn’t keep it from me if she knew more. She might not have said it in front of my family, but she would have told me in private.

“Who else is coming for her?”

“Don’t… know.”

He’s struggling now, and I can tell he’s close to passing out.

“Where’s Simms?”

“Don’t… know.”

There was slim chance he did, but I had to try. I raise my gun and put a bullet through his forehead. A second after I do, there’re three gunshots coming from the backyard. What the hell? I run to the side gate and use my shoulder more than the latch to get through it.

I’m unprepared for the sight that meets me. Santo’s bleeding from his nose and mouth, and it’s obvious someone just tried to beat the shit out of him. Cristiano has his nine-millimeter to some fucker’s temple, and Chellie’s mother has a smoking gun. Not literally. But it’s obvious she’s the one who just shot a guy who’s now floating in the Russos’ pool.

“Chellie? Where’s Chellie?”

Something got her mom out here. Where is she?

“Up here, Enzo.”

I step far enough off the patio and onto the grass to look up to the second-floor windows. Chellie has her own gun, and it’s pointing toward the guy in the pool too. It’s not until our gazes meet that she lowers the weapon. What the fuck Twilight Zone shit did I enter? I look around for Mario, but I don’t see him.

“He’s outside my door. Would you tell him I can come out?”

Did I ask for him out loud and didn’t realize it?

“I know that’s who you’re looking for, Enzo. I’m okay. Tell him to let me out.”

“Mario!”

“Sì, capo.”

I see him step behind Chellie in the window.

“Let Ms. Russo out of her room. Escort her down here.”

It’s only a moment later that she’s flying through the sliding glass door, and I’m running to her. I groan as we slam into each other, jarring both of my wounds. But I don’t care. I kiss her, but it’s all too brief.

“Get the casings.”

I give the order, but when I look around, I realize my men are already gathering the evidence. I look at Cristiano and nod. The moment neither Chellie nor her mom can see, he’ll take care of the other guy. We have silencers on our weapons, but these guys didn’t.

“Where’s your dad?”

“He’s in his study at the window there.”

“With a gun?”

“Yeah. Apparently, we have more in the house than I knew.”

Now I’m the one wondering what the hell kind of family am I marrying into.
