“I don’t need him shooting me. Send your mother in there to get him. We have to go. Now.”

“Wait. Were these guys after my parents, too?”

I hesitate, but I can’t hide it from her. Especially not with her mother standing there listening.

“No. It’s the man we suspected, but it’s personal with him. It’s about some deal that didn’t go through because of your work connections.”

She mouths Triad, and I nod.

I hear someone pull up in the driveway, so I hold my gun up, barrel skyward, as I dash to the gate I passed through only minutes ago. I ease it open just wide enough for my left eye to scout who’s arrived. Thank the Sweet Baby J. I step back and open the gate as a team of our men flood the backyard. I follow them after holstering my gun and latching the gate.

“Enzo?”

I wrap my arm around Chellie when I stop beside her. The men are already pulling the body out of the pool and wrapping up the other one. Some of them are sweeping the yard for casings and anything else that shows a sign of a gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Everything is happening in a synchronized whirlwind, and Chellie doesn’t know where to look.

“They’re cleaners. They’ll make sure there’s nothing that can answer any police questions when they get here. But we need to go, Chellie. They know what to do.”

There’s two dozen of them who buzz around, removing any traces of blood or other bodily remains. There are men inside checking the house, and I know some are in the front yard. Chellie’s parents join us a couple minutes after the team arrives.

“Where are the guns you both fired?”

I need to know because those can’t stay here. Before Chellie or her mother can answer, I hear a voice from above. I look up to see one of our guys in the white hazmat suits with the paper shower cap-looking cover on his head.

“We got ’em,capo.”

I nod to Tony before I hurry Chellie and her parents out to the waiting SUV. No one speaks as we climb in. Santos drives with Cristiano in the front passenger seat. I’m in the third row with Chellie, and Mario sits between Mr. and Mrs. Russo. I’m pretty certain they know he’s in that seat, so he can shoot out of either window easily.

“Uncle Sal’s.”

I give the instructions as I twist to look out the rear window. The van is already backing out of the driveway. I pull out my phone and hit the group text.

Me

Chellie’s with me so are her parents we’re headed to uncle sals

Luca

Do we send more men

It was my tracker and my location that clued Luca in. He knew I’d only hit the alarm there if some shit was going sideways. Those men are just as equipped to make the mess as they are to clean it up.

Me

No

Luca

How long until u r here

Me

An hour or so

An hour in the car with Chellie’s parents is going to be excruciating whether or not we ride in silence.

Luca
