“You never bring anyone home.”

It’s a statement, so I don’t respond.

“Enzo, we need you at the garage. We finally have a lead on who took Aunt Sylvia months ago.”

That was before Maria and Matteo got married. Someone broke into Aunt Sylvia and Uncle Salvatore’s home while their daughters were sleeping upstairs. Uncle Salvatore had been at a meeting and came home unable to find Aunt Sylvia. Turns out, men came in through a bootleggers’ secret entrance into the basement and took her at gunpoint. She knew she’d wake Pia and Natalia if she screamed for the guards. She didn’t want to risk them getting in the middle and getting shot.

She’s elegant and sophisticated, and far too often underestimated because of it. She killed at least two and injured the others long enough to escape. We thought it was related to problems Maria was having with a guy she was involved with before she and Matteo started dating. We discovered the issues were unrelated, but never learned who was behind the attempt to abduct my aunt.

It’s my turn to ask.

“C'è qualcuno lì?” Do you have someone there?

“Yeah. One of the guys who lived. He’s contract.”

That means he doesn’t belong to a syndicate. Basically, he’s a mercenary. We need to find out who hired him.

“E hai bisogno di me?” And do you need me?

“We got his computer, but we can’t get into it. It’s more than just some standard lock screen.”

I run my hand through my hair and look over my shoulder as though I can see Chellie through the door. I want to ask if this can wait until morning, but this is about Aunt Sylvia as much as it is about business. No one would call me in the middle of the night if someone else could get into the computer.

“Va bene. Dammi un'ora.” Fine. Give me an hour.

“An hour? Enzo—”

“Mi ci vorranno almeno trenta minuti per arrivare al garage. Devo fare una doccia e salutarla.” It'll take me at least thirty minutes to get to the garage. I need to shower and say goodbye.

“Who—”

“I’ll see you soon.”

I hang up. I don’t need to explain myself to my brother, and I really don’t want to. I need to think about how I introduce Chellie into my family before they even meet her. I put my phone on the counter and jump in the shower. As I wash myself, I think about how she told me I better not jerk off. I might have a slightly rebellious side which tempts me. But I really don’t want to give myself a hand job when I have a gorgeous girlfriend in my bed. I’d rather slip back into bed and back inside her, but I can’t. Duty calls.

I towel off and brush my teeth before I run a comb through my hair. When I step into the bedroom, Chellie sits up, pushing hair out of her face.

“Enzo?”

“I have to go in to work, little one. I’m sorry I woke you.”

“It’s all right.”

She pushes back the covers and turns away.

“Stay, Chellie. It’s the middle of the night. Go back to sleep. I don’t know when I’ll be done, so I may not make it home before you need to leave for work. I’ll have a car take you to your place then to the office.”

She stands up and walks to me. The light shines around me from the bathroom, illuminating the siren as she approaches. I slide my arms around her and pull her tight.

“You know I’d rather be here with you.”

She reaches between us and cups my hard on.

“I’d rather you stayed too.”

My hands grip her backside and lift her until her legs wrap around my waist. I carry her to my dresser and place her on the cool surface.

“Hold on to the edge. Daddy needs a little snack to tide him over.”
