His footsteps faltered for a moment, and I heard a noise behind him that reminded me of an animal’s growl.

When my gaze lifted to Sebastian, I saw the faintest hint of smoke curling off his skin.

He set the box down where he was, then smoothly walked out of the apartment.

I blinked at the door.

My phone vibrated with a text almost as soon as he was gone.

Unknown

Mix the vegetables into the pasta and sauce, and the food will be ready.

It seemed safe to assume the message was from Sebastian.

“Get out,” Rafael told Zander, his voice still dangerously low.

“I’ll bring your laptop by tomorrow,” Zander said, striding toward the door.

Rafael barely acknowledge the words, his eyes still trained on me.

My heartbeat picked up a little as the door closed behind Zander.

I made my way into the kitchen, heading straight for the vegetables and pasta. My stomach growled loudly as I went.

“I might just be hungry for actual food,” I told Rafael, forcing my voice to remain steady as I grabbed the bowl of vegetables. “I’m not going to try to deal with the lust-drinking thing until I’ve tried to eat the normal way. The reaction could just be because—”

A pair of large hands landed on my hips, and the warmth of the grip cut me off.

My eyes closed, and I dropped the bowl back down on the counter. My fingers found the edge of the thick stone, digging into it lightly.

Almost desperately.

“Physical hunger can’t trigger a lure, Tatum.” His voice was serious, and for once, he called me by my actual name.

“Why not?” My voice strained a little.

I should’ve made him stop touching me.

I should’ve told him to step away.

But for whatever reason, I couldn’t.

Maybe it was the hunger, or the bond, or the lure, but I just couldn’t.

“They’re not related in the slightest. One can’t trigger the other.” His grip eased up on my hips.

“Are you going to teach me how to feed?” My voice was barely above a whisper.

“You won’t need a teacher. Turn around.”

Letting out a soft breath, I released the countertop and did as he’d said. The front of my body brushed his as I did, and warmth blossomed in my middle at the touch. My hands landed on his chest, and the feel of his body beneath my palms made my face flush.

A hint of smoke danced over my skin, and he breathed in deeply, his eyes slamming shut. I didn’t feel anything as that smoke slipped into his nostrils. It didn’t disappear as he stole it, seeming unaffected by him. His chest rumbled against mine, the feeling and sound so soft I almost wanted to call it a purr. “You taste fucking incredible.”

The reddish smoke on his skin was so bright it almost matched his glowing eyes—and it was starting to lean toward me, like I was a magnet or something. My hunger sharpened, and I fought an invisible battle with the fierce desire for the lust on his skin. Forcing my breathing to remain shallow, I didn’t let myself have what I wanted.

It didn’t make any sense to me.
