The silence was actually kind of peaceful as I checked my phone.

That peace faded as I saw the texts and missed calls. Most were from Miley and Brynn, and one was from Sebastian. I checked the text from Sebastian first, figuring it would take longer to reply to Miles and Brynn.

My eyebrows lifted when I read the message—it was a quick explanation about what happened to demons when they let themselves starve.

Apparently, their organs started turning to stone, like a vampire’s did. Rafael was in serious pain when he was starving, and not just hunger pains.

Shit.

But I had just fed Rafael, so that wasn’t going to be a problem for us.

After sending him a thumbs up, I called Miles, knowing she’d put me on speaker so Brynn could hear. Miley was the mama bear out of the three of us, so it was just easier to work through her.

She answered the phone with a demanding, “You’re still alive?”

I glanced at the kitchen, and my gaze met Rafael’s for a moment. His lips curved upward playfully with the contact, and I looked away quickly. “For the most part.”

“You can’t answer sarcastically when you’re imprisoned by your demon mate,” Miley snapped.

“I’m not technically imprisoned.” I paused, and then looked back at Rafe. “I’m not a prisoner, am I?”

“No. I’d have to follow you if you left, but I would never trap you here.” His smile was gone, his forehead furrowing as he frowned.

Right.

He’d just gotten out of prison, and I’d just given him a shitty reminder.

Also… I was supposed to be convincing myself that he was a murderer. When had I forgotten that bit?

Clearly, it wasn’t working.

My curiosity and newfound demonic magic were officially making me insane.

“Not a prisoner. I just checked,” I said into the phone, looking away from Rafael again. My gaze moved over the stunning view of the mountains outside our windows. The sun was almost entirely behind them, leaving just a slice of light over the jagged outline of the range.

“How are the brothers? Hot?” Brynn put in.

“Extremely.”

“What were they there for?”

“They brought groceries, and a new phone and computer for Rafe. And they made us dinner.”

“Seriously?” Brynn asked

“Yep.”

“So they’re like normal brothers?” She sounded amused.

“My brother has never brought me any kind of food, so I’m going to go with no. They seem nice, though.” I brushed a few damp strands of hair out of my eyes. “I saw your texts. What happened?”

“Someone literally bought outallof the candy from all three of our shops,” Miley said. Her voice was as tense as I would’ve expected. “We were going to leave you alone so you had time to figure things out with your demon, but that’s obviously off the table. Sophie resorted to selling your last test batch of peppermint truffles when your afternoon regulars came looking.”

I sat up abruptly. “She didnot.”

“She did.”

“I’m going to kill her.”
