Rafael

Changed my mind. I’m not going to help you leave me.

I shut the fridge door a little too hard.

“Apparently, Raf ordered food. Can I borrow some of your clothes?” I asked Brynn.

She didn’t ask why. “Go ahead. I took the room on the left of the stairs. The right one is for Miles, if…” she trailed off, and her eyes watered.

Mine did too.

I pulled her in for another hug. “Whenshe gets back.”

“Whenshe gets back,” Brynn whispered. “I’ll come with you. I’m tired of being alone with Zander. He doesn’t answer any of my questions.”

He snorted, but didn’t say anything else.

She scowled in his direction, holding my arm as we walked toward the stairs.

“Safe to say you’re not potential mates?” I asked, attempting a joke.

Her nose wrinkled. “No. We’ve spent the last twelve hours together, and he already feels like another brother.”

“I heard that disdain,” he called out.

“I already have too many brothers,” she shot back, and then looked at me. Her voice was soft when she asked, “Are you really leaving Rafael?”

“Yes.” My voice was confident, until I actually pictured myself walking into our apartment and packing my shit. “No.” My voice wavered. “I don’t know. It hurts, knowing how many things he kept from me.”

She squeezed my arm, where she was holding it. “I’m sorry.”

“Me too. I wish Miles wasn’t hurting because of me. I feel like shit for that.”

“They might not turn her,” Brynn said in a small voice.

“From what Raf said, I think it’s inevitable. What if she hates me for what happens? What if her hunger drives her mad? What if—”

Brynn squeezed my arm again. “Don’t lose yourself in the what-ifs. Out of all of us, Miles is the most rational and capable. Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out. If she hates you, we’ll woo her back with chocolate.”

“You know she rarely eat my chocolates,” I tossed back.

“With blood, then. We’ve both got plenty of that.” She gave me a small smile, and I couldn’t help but return it.

Brynn sat on the toilet while I slipped into the shower.

“What do you know about vampires?” I asked.

“Not much. I really don’t interact with supernaturals except my brothers, and you guys are always with me. You know I don’t see them all that often.”

I nodded even though she couldn’t see me, as I started to wash my hair.

“Do you think Rafael will answer all of our questions about them if we ask?” she wondered.

I hesitated. Part of me wanted to say no, just because I was still hurt and pissed off. But honestly… “Yes,” I admitted. “I told him if he kept anything else from me, we were done for good. I think he believed me.”

“Didyoubelieve you?”

“I don’t know.” I closed my eyes, letting the hot water roll over me. “I think I do. I trusted him, before. Part of me still does. If he lies again, or hides anything else, that part will be gone. I don’t know where we could possibly go from there.” After a pause, I asked her quietly, “How long do you think it’ll be until she lets someone in after this?”
