I should move away. His grip is loosening, and I’m free to leave. He’s quiet as his hand falls back to his side, allowing me to go back to Elliot.

No matter what is unsaid, no matter how he feels about me, Ethan knows his brother calls the shots, and that if I know what’s good for me, for him, for everyone’s sanity, then I should step away and go back to the living room.

It’s a shame I don’t want to.

His next breath is slow, deep.

“You’re unbearable.”

Those are the only words he exhales harshly as he flips me around and his lips capture mine.

I whimper when he grabs my waist, and he presses harder. Lips against lips, hard, unrelenting pressure. He lifts me and sits me on the kitchen table. I spread my legs to allow him to stay close to me.

And finally.

Finally, his tongue breaches past and strokes mine. I moan into his mouth, kissing him back with all the love I’ve ever felt for him. It’s deeply emotional, and I want to cry out how much I still feel for him. Always have.

I don’t need to. He can read my mind. I’m an open book to the man who never stopped learning about me, teaching me how to exist, to be myself. I don’t need to express one word to someone who never stopped loving me.

Ravaging my mouth, he bites my tongue, then licks the wound. He moans when I bite back, starving for him.

I fucking hate Caden for being the only other person who knows what I know; Ethan is irresistible when he moans.

His forehead rests down on mine as we catch our breaths.

“Mi Cielo,” he pants, his lips grazing mine. His hands leave my waist to press on either side of my head. “I’m sorry.”

I want to cry. The emotions in his voice are breaking me. So much longing and regret. So much unrestricted love.

I can’t breathe, a sob stuck in my throat.

“I’m sorry I pushed you away.” His hold tightens, my neck straining from the way he’s forcing me to look up at him. The angle is uncomfortable, unnatural, but I don’t want to move. “I’m sorry I let you go. I’m sorry we found you.”

He kisses my hairline with a strength that would have made me fall back if he wasn’t holding me so tightly.

“I make selfish mistake after selfish mistake when it comes to you, Jade. I can’t think straight… I shouldn’t have helped him look for you. I’m sorry you’re back here, in my arms. I’m sorry because I’ll never let you go again. I helped you run away, only to drag you back…and I wouldn’t change that for anything.”

Gulping a breath, memories of the morning I ran away crash into me.

My phone lights up with a message from Stanislav. We only met a week ago, and he’s already obsessed enough to give me anything I want.

But anything I want always comes with a price when it’s offered by powerful men. Whether they’re the kings of the world, or big fishes in a small pond, men always find a way to shackle you the moment you reach out to grab what they’re presenting on a silver platter.

Stanislav: I didn’t think I’d hear back from you after you told me to, and I quote, use a cactus as a dildo and go fuck my own ass.

I guess my initial response to his offer was not what this man is used to. But I wasn’t desperate back then, and I didn’t need him. Things have changed, tables have turned, and I need to leave this town…yesterday.

Word travels fast in our town. Last night, Caden King killed Sawyer after keeping him in the brothers’ basement for weeks. I should have run away the moment they caught him. But I was stupid, thought myself invincible.

Sawyer is dead, and I’m next on the list.

A knock on my door startles me. My heart drops so low it turns my feet heavy and stops me from pacing around the studio my mom and I live in. She’s sleeping right now, exhausted from the round of hard chemo yesterday. That’s the only reason I didn’t leave the second I learned Sawyer was dead. I wanted to make sure she got home safely, that she had someone by her side until at least the morning.

“Jade!” I recognize all too well the voice shouting behind the door.

My thumbs fly across my phone screen.

Jade: I was playing hard to get…
