I’ve always been an observant man. Gauging human reactions saved me from my dad’s volatile moods more than once. Later in life, it helped me manipulate the people around me. I’m not about to stop myself now. I see the small shift of Kay’s feet, the slightest movement of the gun. Kayla King doesn’t react well to threats, but she’s hesitating, and I cling onto that.

“You don’t only have a problem with me, or you wouldn’t be this angry. Put the gun away and let’s talk. I’m here to listen. To help you. It’s not just my job, Kay. We’re family.”

And just like that, I got her.

She pushes Jade violently, the movement making her slam against the floor. But the gun is off her, and Kay puts it at the back of her jeans.

“Alright,” she chuckles. “You want to talk?”

Ethan helps Jade up and sits her on his lap.

“What’s happening?” I ask seriously as I sit back down.

“Emma Scott is threatening me. That’s what’s happening. And I’m pretty sure it’s because of this traitor. And this fucking bank robbery isn’t happening any time soon with the pace at which you work.”

“Emma is the head of NSC. Her very existence is a threat to you.” My deadpan tone doesn’t seem to help the situation.

“Emma isn’t a threat if she has nothing on me.” Her eyes narrow on Jade. “Butsomeonetold her that Jade was with Stan, and that Stan is a Bratva Wolf. A pretty important one. And now she’s threatening us to tell them that we’re the ones who have Jade if I don’t accept to set up a fight in the Death Cage.”

My back stiffens, and my head snaps to the side. Ethan is frozen on the spot, his hands on Jade’s hips.

She looks at me, doing her best to hide her panic and failing miserably. “I thought you knew,” she whispers.

Oh. The little…

“I didn’t snitch to Emma!” Darkness envelops her pupils, that rage inside her showing. “I didn’t do shit. I don’t know how she knows—”

“Stan is a Wolf?” I don’t think she likes the undertones of violence pouring out of my mouth, the warning that she’s about to pay for hiding that from us.

“Whoa. Hold on.” For the second time today, Kay pinches the bridge of her nose.

I’m sure that’s how she reacts when her kids do something stupid. She talks slowly, like she can’t believe what she’s hearing.

“You two fuckers found Jade. Convinced me to let you go get her. Went all the way to New York. Brought her back to the North Shore against her will…and atnopoint did you check who the fucker was who paid her to be a stay-at-home whore?”

Jade’s angry eyes go to Kay. “Fuck you,” she hisses.

“If you knew, why didn’t you tell us?” Ethan jumps in. “Of course, we didn’t fucking know.”

“Because I thought two of my most important men had enough brain cells to rub together between them,” she snaps. “I only learned about it once you came back. I thought you’d done your fucking homework. I have other shit to worry about than looking after you two. You’re meant to be useful, not bring more trouble to me. Now your girlfriend is using the only thing she has on us to threaten us.”

“I’m not!” Jade stands up, not scared of anything now that she’s angry.

This is how she’s going to die one day. I’ll be looking away for one minute and she’ll be getting herself into trouble by shouting at the wrong person.

Exactly like she’s doing right now.

“Jade.” Ethan tries to grab her at the same time as he warns her, but she jerks away from his hold.

“No,” she fights back. “Don’t even try to tell me to calm down because I didn’t do shit!”

There’s a stretched silence before Ethan says. “Okay.”

“Okay?” Kay hisses.

I nod, supporting my brother. “She says she didn’t go to Emma.” I shrug. “So she didn’t.”

Jade’s gaze hops from me to Ethan, back and forth with wide, surprised eyes. “You…believe me?”
