“Jade!” I hear him shout just as I surround myself with people.

And maybe one of them is going to end me.

I’m just coming through to the other side, when the unmistakable sound of a police siren rings out.

Time freezes for a split second, everyone going quiet before someone screams. “Cops!”

All hell breaks loose. It takes me a few seconds of being pushed around as the crowd disperses before I snap back into reality.

“Fuck,” I hiss, sprinting in the direction of my car. I look around for Ethan and Elliot, but they’re nowhere to be found. People are bumping into my shoulders, trying to go past me.

My phone rings as I run.

Elliot. He talks the second I pick up.

“Get in your car. We’ll take the van. Meet at home.” The orders are direct. Spoken smoothly. He’s not one to panic.

His heart isn’t beating crazy like mine. His fingers aren’t numb like mine.

His head is clear…unlike mine.

“Jade. Is that clear?”

“Y-yes.”

There’s a short beat before emotions take hold of his syllables. “Be safe. I love you.”

I’m pretty sure I’m about to say it back. I don’t know. I hesitate too long. Someone knocks me and my phone drops. Next thing I know, it’s crushed under someone’s shoe as they run past me.

“Fuck.” I look around, finding my car in the mess of shouting and hazy movements. I keep on my trajectory as the sirens get closer. The blue lights are right here. There’s no time to waste.

I jump in my car, speeding away and making sure I’m not running over anyone. It’s one thing to get caught illegally street racing. It’s something else to kill someone with said car. Especially when we put everything in place to not hurt anyone. There’s a reason we do it in a deserted place.

Smoke trails behind me as I race across the abandoned area.

I’m out before most people, and I think that’s actually a bad thing, makes me look guilty as fuck. I know it because there’s a blue light speeding after me. My heart is beating three times the rhythm of the sirens.

I drift onto a different street and accelerate again in a straight line. I lose them quickly. Almost too easily. I slow down, catching my breath as I make my way to the truss bridge. No need to hurry anymore. My heart finally calms down, and I wipe my hands against my jeans.

“Holy shit.” A sigh of relief leaves me.

I’m about to get on the bridge when a black car coming from the bridge lights up, a siren ringing and blue light blinding me.

I brake hard, skidding across the asphalt. It’s an unmarked car.

I veer right, pressing the gas pedal again, trying to convince myself they’re not here for me.

How foolish.

I don’t give up, though. Speeding again, I follow the Silver Snake River until I find a street where I can take a right. We’re closer to the woods now, only some buildings still within sight. I’m about to take a left onto a dirt road, with no choice since there’s a building right in front of me. Another police car comes from exactly where I want to turn. I’m forced to slam on my brakes, so I don’t crash into them.

“Fuck!”

The other police car blocks me in from behind. I’m stuck in the corner of that road. Trees, the building, the two police cars. I’ve got nowhere to go.

My heart drops to my stomach. It’s me alone with four cops. I turn the engine off, already expecting them to burst out of their cars, guns pointed at me, so I keep my hands in front of me.

But they stay inside, and only one comes out.
