He puts a placating hand in front of him as he walks to my window. It’s like he wants to tell me it’s all going to be fine.

He knocks on my window, indicating to lower it.

“Evening. Can I see your license, please?”

“I…”never took my driving test.“Don’t have it with me.”

I’ve never needed to take a test to know how to drive. My dad taught me. It was too fucking expensive, and with time, I just left it. I’d never been arrested for driving before.

He shines a light in my car, checking what’s in here.

“Your vehicle has been seen at an illegal street race. I’m going to have to ask you to step out, please.”

He’s polite, looks like the kind of guy with a wife and a family. Just doing his job, just trying to keep his town safe. I know I’m being lucky right now. They chased after me, they know I was up to no good. But I chance it anyway…

I swallow thickly. “I think you’re mistaken. It wasn’t me.”

“It wasn’t you,” he repeats. “Is that why we had to chase you to get you to stop? Your car matches the details we’ve been sent.”

“Black?” Suddenly, I’m glad my car isn’t pink anymore.

He looks at me, his mouth twisting. Almost like he feels bad for me. “The license plate frame sayingif you see this, I’m winningalso helped. Look, I convinced my colleagues to not jump out of their cars, all guns blazing, because I saw you were a young woman on your own, but you have to give me something to work with here. This doesn’t have to be difficult. Step out of the vehicle, please.”

I look around. All the other cops are in their cars. It’s just him. He’s not threatening, neither in his words nor in his physique. A twig compared to Ethan and Elliot. Taking a deep breath, I open the door and come out.

And that’s when his behavior changes. His entire stature switches fromI’m a good guytoyou’re fuckedin a few seconds.

My stomach twists, my instincts telling me to jump back in my car right now as I close the door behind me.

And it’s too late. He grabs my upper arm violently, flipping me around and slamming my body against the car.

“What the fu—”

“Ma’am, you’re under arrest for engaging in illegal street racing, reckless driving, and endangerment of public safety—”

“Wait! Wait, what the fuck…”

“—You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can—”

“You’re hurting me,” I squeak as he cuffs me so tightly my blood instantly stops flowing to my hands.

“—and will be used against you in a court of law.”

“Fucking asshole,” I rage, twisting in his hold.

He slams me harder against the side of my car, his hand coming to the back of my neck.

He talks low when his other hand presses against my wrist, right where my Kings’ crown is tattooed. “Kings’ crew, huh?”

I open my mouth to talk, but he cuts me off again, making sure he speaks loudly enough for his colleagues to hear he’s following procedure.

“Ma’am, I have reason to believe you may be armed or possess something dangerous. I’m going to perform a frisk for weapons. You have the right to refuse, but if you do, I may have to take further action.”

I try to scream. “I ref—” He grabs my hair, slamming my head against the car.

His official tone drops as he hisses in my ear. “Now is the right time for you to shut the fuck up.”

“I don’t have anything on me!”
