“She wasattacked!”

“I don’t give shit. And what the fuck were you doing at an illegal race anyway?” His voice booms in the house, much deeper and louder than hers. “You said you were revising with Peach.”

“You know you’d never let me go there. You’re overprotective.”

“Over…overprotective? Damn fucking right I am. Now listen to me. My crew and hers are at war. I’m not bringing any of that shit to the house. Toyou.”

“Yourcrew? Are you part of NSC again, now?”

“You know what I mean.”

There’s some moving around, and I follow along the wall, not wanting to miss anything.

“She’s my friend, Xi.”

“She’s not your friend. You have no idea the kind of things this girl has done.”

“Ah. Yes. And you, you never did anything wrong. Asaint.”

A chair moves, and there are steps walking toward the room. “Come back here,” he calls after her. “Alexandra!”

The steps pause. “What?” Her clipped voice is followed by pause.

“Cupcake, please. I lost my best friend because of that girl. You don’t get to bring her here and rub it in my face. She’s leaving. End of the discussion.”

There’s a sharp inhale. A pause. And the steps come toward me again.

I pull away from the wall, looking for my shoes around the room.

There’s a knock on the door, and when I don’t answer, it opens slowly.

“Jade?” Alex’s high-pitched voice contaminates the room with her worry. “I brought you some tea.”

She steps all the way in as I grab my left shoe.

“Are you leaving?” She puts the cup down on the bedside table. “Wait. At least have a hot drink.”

“I have to go home.”

Where the hell is that? I can’t go to Ethan and Elliot right now.

“Just…just wait.” She approaches me slowly, clearly concerned she’s going to scare me off. “If it’s because you heard Xi…”

I go on my knees, checking under the bed and finally grabbing my right shoe.

“I—It’s my fault, but I want to make sure you’re okay before you leave. Please, at least—”

I stand back up, stopping her with a simple look. “You told him.”

“I’m so sorry, I—”

“Why would you do that?” I put my second combat boot on, doing the laces. “Why?”

Panic seizes my chest, fear making my hands tremble.

“I’m sorry. I panicked. I was trying to tell him why I brought you here and—”

“He told Elliot and Ethan, didn’t he? It’s bad. It—” I lose my voice again. “Fuck,” I squeak.
