“Did you do that?”

“I learned a few things from working on the van with our girl.”

Elliot huffs. “It still feels strange to call herourgirl.”

“I know.”

“But she is our girl, isn’t she?” He pauses, clearly thinking. “I worked so hard to have her to myself. You never had to put in the effort. She was in love with you all along.”

“She’s never going to choose, brother. The longer it lasts, the worse it gets. She thought she could get out of this situation, but she waited, and she keeps getting deeper and deeper in her feelings. And now look; she’s in love with both of us.”

“Yeah, right,” he snorts.

Hall starts slowing down, putting his hazard lights on.

“What’s that about?” I ask, curious of his reaction. It’s not like Elliot to doubt someone’s devotion to him. He’s seen it all from women over the years. They have always wanted him badly enough to do anything to get him.

“Whatever she feels for me isn’t love. And to be honest, brother, I don’t know if it’ll ever be.”

“Are you insane?” I press the brake harder when Hall’s car suddenly stops working. He’s got just enough momentum to pull over to the side of the road.

“Do you know how many times I’ve heard her tell you she loves you since she’s been back?

“You counted?”

“Four. That I know of.”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I huff.

“I’m obsessed. That’s what’s wrong. Do you know how many times she told me?”

“I’m going to assume zero,” I say deadpan. I pull over right behind Hall’s car.

“The only time she used the word love toward me was to say she loved the both of us.”

I play with my helix piercing. “So she did say she loved you—”

“Stop pissing me off, Ethan. We’re doing some important work, and I don’t want to ruin it just because you make me lose my shit.”

“I was trying to help. Okay, so she didn’t tell you she’s in love with you. She is, though.”

“I want to choke that smug voice out of you right now.”

I smile at him when he turns to me. “You just hate when I have something you don’t, so I’m telling you; she is in love with you.”

Hall finally gets out of his car, eyeing us suspiciously. He makes a show of showing his gun attached to his belt as he walks to the front of his vehicle.

“Are you just going to stay in your truck and watch him fix his?”

I shake my head. “You stay here and let me do what I’m good at, alright?”

I get out, putting a cap on just for show. Just because it says I want to hide my face and it’ll make the cop even more uncomfortable.

“You alright there, pal?” I call out.

He looks up from the open hood of his car.

“Who are you?”
