He made her doubt herself, doubtus.

If Xi’s girlfriend hadn’t showed up at the scene, who knows what could have happened.

The fact that Elliot is coming with me means everything. A line has been crossed. One we can’t accept.

That man signed his death warrant when he assaulted her. But we go by our own law on the North Shore.

On the other side of that bridge, I’m the judge, the jury, the executioner. I’m the entire fucking court. That cop is about to leave his house like he does every night. We’ve been observing him. He leaves his perfect family for the convenience store, buys a pack of cigarettes, takes one out, smokes it, then throws the whole pack away to pretend to himself that he’s quitting, and repeats the same thing the next night. Except this time, he won’t be coming back home.

The second I see him exit, I start the car.

“Obvious much?” Elliot says in a low tone. “Take your time, brother.”

“Elliot,” I sigh. “I know you’re used to us always following your lead, but this is my territory. I know what I’m doing.”

I can feel him looking at me, but I keep my eyes on Hall.

“If you leave right after him, it’ll give us away before we even get close enough.”

“Maybe I want him to know. To realize he’s being followed. To start getting scared of what’s going to happen to him.”

I hear Elliot inhale, ready to talk. He stops himself. “Fucking hell. You really are one of those psycho killers, aren’t you?”

“You have no idea.”

I press the gas pedal and follow Hall down his street.

“I knew you were intense from the state of your victims, but I don’t think I expected the chasing.”

“And yet here we are.”

I follow him over a few blocks, making sure to indicate as soon as he does, to replicate his exact driving.

I can tell when he gets it. When he starts going around in circles to test if we’re following. And I do. I keep making sure to go exactly where he does. He follows the Silver Snake River and turns into the forest.

Big.

Mistake.

Once he gets on the long road that crosses the woods, his fate is sealed. The trees here are so big they reach over to the other side of the road. It looks like a tunnel made of creepy branches and shadows. The moonlight barely gets through, dangerously isolating the place.

The only lights are the ones from our cars illuminating the ominous road.

“The guy must be scared to death right now,” Elliot chuckles.

I smirk. “That’s the plan, isn’t it?”

My brother turns to me again, and this time I glance at him. “I’ve never heard that in your voice.”

“What?”

“That kind of excitement. It’s creepy as fuck, Ethan.”

I laugh. “I’m weird. You said it yourself.”

“It’s a good kind of weird.”

Right on time, the front of his car starts smoking. Elliot cocks his head, confused.
