But that’s not why we’re here today. Xi Benhaim might want to leave the war behind, but he’s got something we want. Something weneed.

I grab the gun from the glove compartment and load it.

“Patience, brother,” Ethan says calmly.

My stepbrother and I don’t always have the same way of doing things. He’s quiet, composed, patient. Or so everyone thinks.

I’m a ticking time bomb. Especially since we started looking for our mutual ex-girlfriend.

Two years ago.

If that’s not being patient, I don’t fucking know what is.

He pushes the gun down with a hand on the barrel. “He’s coming.”

Xi bursts out of his house, topless, and his own gun tucked into his jeans. I can see the three ugly scars he still has from the time our best friend Caden stabbed him.

Things have changed since then. Caden and Billie Scott fell in love, despite being from different crews. Xi, who used to be in love with Billie, got over his stepsister and found himself a girl from a nearby town called Stoneview, where billionaires like her live. If the South Bank feels out of reach, then Stoneview isn’t even in our stratosphere.

Through the changes over the past years, something stayed exactly the same: Jade is impossible to find.

Ethan and I get out of the car in tandem. I round the front to face the man who has what we want.

And then our passenger gets out as well.

“I’ll be doing the talking,” Caden says just before Xi gets into earshot. And I’ll let him. I’m not patient, but I’m a man who always has a plan. Today, my plan was to bring someone Xi will want out of his sight even more than Ethan and me. And that someone is Caden King.

The NSC man doesn’t bother with formalities. He stops just short of barging into us and eyes us one after the other, his nostrils flared and jaw clenched.

“Emma and Kayla had a talk,” he growls low. Emma Scott is the head of NSC, and Kayla King is our boss and Caden’s sister. “This very house is on neutral territory. Keep me out of your shit because I’ve left it all behind. Did you fuckers not get the memo?”

The two women at the head of our opposite gangs rarely discuss anything, but Kay made us aware of the new rule. Xi Benhaim is out, and his house has turned into neutral territory. It’s crazy what love can do. I wonder what Emma offered for Kay to agree. Both are ruthless businesswomen.

What they didn’t anticipate is that Ethan and I don’t give a shit about their little truce. We want to find the woman who betrayed us, and Xi has the information we want.

“Same,” Cade chuckles. “Isn’t life on the right side of the law just so boring? I’d give anything to stab a fucker three times in the stomach again.”

Xi narrows his eyes at his lifelong enemy.

“But Billie won’t let me.” My best friend sighs dramatically. “And you know what they say. Happy wife…happy Caden King when he makes her scream his name. Or something like that.”

Cade’s attempt at taunting Xi doesn’t even make him blink. The man is so taken by Alex Delacroix, I don’t think he remembers Billie’s last name.

I’m ready to start threatening him, maybe mention his girlfriend standing by the window and watching us with the clear order to stay inside the house.

Before I can say anything, he addresses Ethan and me.

“I want you to know that if sparing your life wasn’t in the deal Emma made with Kay, you would both be six feet under for what you did to Zara.”

Ah, yes. I forgot to mention we killed his childhood best friend in our search for Jade. Xi is the only one with the information, and we needed to convince him. Not our proudest moment, but not the worst thing we’ve ever done either.

“Fucking do it,” I sneer. “Just try.”

“No,” he says sternly. “It’s part of the deal, and I’m a man of my word. It’s keeping me out of this war, and that’s all I want. My life is about protecting the woman I love, not avenging the dead.”

He lifts his hand, showing us the ripped piece of paper he’s holding.

“That’s where Jade is hiding. I’m going to give it to you and never see your fucking faces again, that clear? Come near me, my woman, or my family, and you’ll wish you were never born. Deal or no deal.” He shoves the paper into Ethan’s chest, my brother barely catching it in his hand, and walks back to his house.
